The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Storing session login data (ASP)

Asked by tigermatt in Active Server Pages (ASP), Web Languages/Standards, Active Directory

I am developing an application which is going to be used both internally and externally within a large organisation. User logins are handled by using a user's Active Directory username and password. However, since it would be silly to store a user's username and password in a cookie and to use this on every page load to verify the user is authenticated, what is the best method of storing (and being able to verify) that a user is indeed authenticated to the application and allowed to use it?

At the moment, I am verifying the username and password of the user against Active Directory when they log in, then using a temporary "session" table in the database to store the user's username as well as a very long, random alphanumeric string. These are then set in two session cookies, and then at every page load, a quick SQL query verifies the two session cookie values are present as a row in the database. A cleanup engine cleans up after the old sessions every hour.

So, my two questions are:
1. Is this the best way to do it, or can you recommend a better, more secure way to do this, bearing in mind that it needs to be feasible?
2. If I am using cookies to store any of my data, would it be best to store the data in session cookies or normal cookies? I'm leaning more towards normal cookies, because session cookies are stored at the server and could potentially be intercepted.Start Free Trial
