I've been working in IT since the early 80's, primarily with server hardware and operating systems. I was a DEC Support Engineer for PDP-11 and VAX-11 hardware & peripherals, and a DEC Software Specialist  in VMS and ALL-IN-1, and also did a bit of work with Ultrix and Tru64 Unix. I did a bit of VMS system programming, writing things like assembly language code to disable/enable the cache in a VAX, and a fair bit of VMS application programming using Pascal, FMS and System Services.

I really got involved with PC's in the late 80's, when the AT (80286) came out, doing a lot of work with DEC Pathworks, Teamlinks and Linkworks (a product way ahead of its time). I started doing Windows app dev using VB, C and C++, but moved on to Delphi when it came out.

I was an early adopter of Windows NT, participating in the NT 3.1 Beta and rolling out NT 3.5 systems to customers. Since then, I've done alot of work with Windows NT4, 2000 & 2003, Citrix Winframe & Metaframe, and Linux, with customers and systems of all sizes and sorts.

I've got all the usual sorts of qualifications (MCSE in NT4 & 2003, RHCE, CCA, etc), but none of that counts for anything compared with real world experience. I consider myself an IT Generalist (as opposed to a Specialist), although most of my experience is in the server space.

I enjoy troubleshooting problems, training & mentoring less experienced IT professionals, designing and implementing systems, and making things work the way that people want them to (sometimes that involves custom apps, which I usually write in Delphi). I'm fortunate enough to have a job that enables me to do all of that and more, and a wife & kids that don't mind me spending a bit of time helping out other people after-hours (it's better than watching the rubbish that's on TV most of the time!).
