What is there to say?

In my early 30's and been intrested in computers since as long ago as i can rember. My first real PC was a  IBM Intel 8088 @ 4.77 MHz
IT had 2!! hard drive comming in at 10MBytes each ;) wow that was good fun, on which I learnt to program in basic. WE had the CGA monitor on it so we could see things in all of 4 colours!!
In fact its the very one on the link below. Although the Harddrives came in a seperate unit. About the same size of the base unit shown!

I have a particular intrest in networks, but in my current postion I am lucky in that I get to play with many areas of a corprate network.  

Over the last few years I have been getting more involved in the network side, as can be seen from my areas of expertise on this site. The current network I work on is mainly Cisco based with on main site of 30ish buildings and 100+ switchs. we also have 16 regional sites around the country, and after spending the past year or so upgrading the Fibre run on site and purchasing and fitting Cisco kit to replace all our very old 3Com Equipment, I am now starting the process of moving to an  up todate layer three layout. Implementing 802.1x security for access control. And really re-designing the whole thing from the ground up. Which has gained me a lot of experince so far.

I am also working on a second site network, that is implementing among others, Cisco IOS based firewalls, Linux servers (starting to really apreicate this OS!!!, although i'm forever trying a #copy run start when I have finished!!!), and wireless. All of which is providing lots of good experince.

I have a wide area of intrest in IT. In my current job I concentrate on network side of things. which involves Cisco switchs (and a few old 3com's). This is the area i would like to move more towards. this takes up about 40 to 50% of my time. I also spend a lot of time monitering the network.
Both the physical side of it with applications such as Observer from network instrument, kiwi cat tools and other small tools that i have gathered in to my "tool box" over the years.
I also monitor the server side as well with a hard wear monitering system as well as the tools in my "tool box".

Aside from the network side of things. I have the role of setting up the backup soft wear. instaling and bringing online new servers, trouble shooting and fixing every thing.

I have only worked in IT for the Last 4 years. and my current job has given me a wide varity of exposure to the field. I have carried out courses in

However much of my experince comes from hands on work.

My current  project will be to convert our 1200+ devices, 30+ buildings on site from its current Flat layer 2 network. In to an efficent Layer 3 ip based network. I have spent the last years taking on a unmanaged 3COM network of around 100+ switches. And starting from scratch and with almost no down time have configured the layer 2 side. I have now finally been giving the go ahead to  move it to a Layer 3 network so will be configuring this along side my CCNA courses.

By the end of the year I hope to have completed my CCNA wireless and Security and started on my CCNP followed by my CCSP towards the end of next year.
