What is there to say?

In my early 30's and been intrested in computers since as long ago as i can rember. My first real PC was a  IBM Intel 8088 @ 4.77 MHz
IT had 2!! hard drive comming in at 10MBytes each ;) wow that was good fun. I learnt to program in basic, and loved Microsoft Flight sim.. WE had the CGA monitor on it so we could see things in all of 4 colours!!
In fact its the very one on the link below. Although the Harddrives came in a seperate unit. About the same size of the base unit shown!

Any way after that i progressed through many Systems. although I brought my first "own" PC (one above was a family PC) when i was about 19. it was a 266mhz system and was the first and last system i ever brought. I recently sold that same PC. Although it has to be said the only original part was the 3.5inch floppy. IT left my hands with a 4.6gig duel core AMD chip and a few WD raptors. I now just keep a laptop at home. The three or four systems on my desk at work, along with the 80 odd servers and 100+ switchs keep my addiction in check.

I have a particular intrest in networks, but in my current postion I am lucky in that I get to play with many areas of a corprate network. Hopefully over the next year or so i will be able to get some more quilifications in various areas of IT, until i can officaly claim to be a true Expet in IT.

Skills / Accomplishments:
I have a wide area of intrest in IT. In my current job I concentrate on network side of things. which involves Cisco switchs (and a few old 3com's). This is the area i would like to move more towards. this takes up about 40 to 50% of my time. I also spend a lot of time monitering the network.
Both the physical side of it with applications such as Observer from network instrument, kiwi cat tools and other small tools that i have gathered in to my "tool box" over the years.
I also monitor the server side as well with a hard wear monitering system as well as the tools in my "tool box".

Aside from the network side of things. I have the role of setting up the backup soft wear. instaling and bringing online new servers. trouble shooting and fixing every thing from accross the network.

I have only worked in IT for the Last 4 years. and my current job has given me a wide varity of exposure to the field. I have carried out courses in

Exchange 2003 (M2400)
Cisco CCNA
Veritas Netback up 6.5 (5 day Admin Course)
Network and system Administration (Lancaster university)
Microsoft Office
Microsoft Windows XP

However much of my experince comes from hands on work. and my next project it so redesign and reimplement the Backups for our network. We have 80+ servers on the main site. and more dotted around the 16 remote sites we have. WE currently use a varity of back up solutions but I am hopping to consolidate to Netbackup and streamline our back ups. After that I am Looking to reserch in to our WAN link which is currently very over uterlised and spend time carrying out some indepth monitering and look at ways to improve the situation. Then my next project will be to convert our 1200+ devices, 30+ buildings on site from its current Flat layer2 network. In to an efficent Layer3 ip based network. Hopefully in doing this I will be able to become much more experinced in Networking and achive my CCNA and above.
