Upon early retirement after 35 years, while bored after retirement, I became a full time expert here on EE, later assigned as a site Moderator position by Linda Gardner. Several months later, the site practically shut down, no internal working staff left, as well as online administrators and moderators also left. I took over the Community Support area for settling disputes and manually awarding questions to the Experts who had answered the questions also splitting points among other contributing experts. This was an attempt to keep the site up and running to keep the site alive in hopes it would be purchased. We had tens of thousands of open answered questions, and others which needed deletion, soon a couple of other moderators came back to help.
Not to mention there were still people looking for answers to their questions, an incentive to continue, what are Zones now were once called TA's (Topic Areas), each of us would tackle one or more TA's to clean them up of old questions to improve the database, and make the site attractive for a potential buyer. We asked many of the Experts who had left to come back to help, many did return. Mind you these were all unpaid jobs, but had a love for the site, we achieved our goal and the site was purchased within a year.
I will not get into the details of why the site collapsed in the first place, nor the history, although I believe it should be documented for all to read, those who came back in the second beginning deserve an immense amount of credit, as those who purchased the site and their teams who began improving the design and make it what it is today, almost 12 years later. It only goes to show the value of hard work and teams working together.
In 2007 I resigned from the site permanently under being accused of padding my own expert points, odd though I was no longer working as an expert, and often times refunding the points to the member who asked the questions. While I will not mention the details or names of those involved, just let sleeping dogs lie as the saying goes. To this day I still receive notifications to questions which are in trouble of not being answered, and help when I have the time. I am very busy now, and having just beaten my second round of Cancer, it is time to revamp my book before having it published. A true story of when I worked in the Middle East, in particular, Libya-SPLAJ...a story of the many dangers working and living in Muslim Countries under the law of Islam, torture, escape and survival.
