Please take care!
Please take all due care with suggested queries and procedures. That is, test them on test systems first. Make sure that you have current backups of production and system databases.
System database backup
A tip for system database backups: When restarting SQL, take the opportunity to take an off-line copy of the system databases. If for some reason SQL wont start as a system database is corrupt, you'll have a file-copy to go back to. Of course you'll then want to restore a current SQL backup of the relevant database, but it will be a lot quicker than using rebuild, or the repair/recover feature of the installation setup.
Database Maintenance Routines
I've had a lot of success deploying Ola Hallengren's maintenance.sql script. It pretty much does everything - leaves several jobs behind for backups/integrity checks/index optimisation. Apart from changing 3 defaults and setting up the backup directory almost all thats left is to schedule the jobs and set email notifications on them. See https://ola.hallengren.com/
