>25 years in IT. One of the last generalists.
Computer Operations/ IT management, Network design and administration, process automation, troubleshooting, ROI and cost/benefit analysis, general handy guy.
Managed Computer Operations when the Mainframe was King.
Saw the birth of the "IBM" PC. Know them inside-and-out from 8088 thru P4 +, ISA, MCA, EISA, PCI, PCI-X, etc., DIP RAM chips, SIMMs, DIMMs, DRAM, MDRAM, SDRAM, RDRAM, MFM, RLL, IDE, EIDE, ATA, SATA, SCSI, etc. Witnessed the "dumbing down" of BIOS config by Dell. Railed at the proprietary tendencies of IBM and Compaq desktops, and the lousy support of HP in general. Mourned the loss of Compaq as a server manufacturer to HP, and the subsequent "HP-ification" of the Compaq server line and, worse, their support site.
I remember when Insight Manager used to be good.
I remember when nobody knew what the Internet was, and the big thing was dial-up BBS's.
I Witnessed the AOL takover and ruining of Compuserve, which USED to be the best place for techies to exchange info. Now we have E-E (shameless plug)
I have actually worked with 8" floppies. I know what an acutator is, and what a bus-and-tag cable is for.
I remember when a "removable disk" was 20" in diameter and had several platters.
I know the significance of column 72.
I remember back at least 15 years ago, when Novell was first declared dead. Ha. Ain't gonna happen.
Managed Netware networks from 3.12 through 6, install, config, support, troubleshoot, migrate.
Years of experience with Novell products including GroupWise, ZENworks, BorderManager.
Experienced with integration of Windows servers in a NetWare environment. Client support experience spans from DOS through WinXP and Mac OS 7 thru X. IP and IPX, Ethernet through Gigabit speeds, routing, switching, etc.
And printers - can't forget about them. So much for the paperless office...
Getting pressured to go "all Windows, all the time." Ain't gonna happen. Too many better alternatives - like Linux and NetWare...
Getting to know Linux as well as I know NetWare and Windoze is my next challenge.
"Featured Expert" for the Novell TA for the entire year of 2005 and 2006. First NetWare "Sage" certified Expert.
Broke the 1 million point mark 12/6/2005
First NetWare "Genius" certified Expert 3/8/2006
P.S. The handle refers to my enjoyment of the music of Pink Floyd, as in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Not a reference to "shining someone on" or "getting a shine on."
