Question

Foxpro 2.6 running on Windows XP

Asked by: wendelina

I have a Foxpro 2.6 app. that one of my departments uses on approx. 8 pc's. All of the pc's are the same model and all run Windows XP Pro. When I launch the program I get: I/O Operation failure  about 50% of the time, the other 50% it runs just fine. Any ideas?  The rest of the pc's give me mixed errors never loading the program. The errors include, "Picture too big, corrupt, invalid format" or "Insufficient memory"  they all have 256MB of RAM. If I try to run the program from my pc, also running XP w/256MB RAM, the program runs like a champ.

Thanks in advance!

Scott

Is that FoxPro 2.6 for DOS or FoxPro 2.6 for Windows running under Windows XP?

by: CarlWarnerPosted on 2004-03-05 at 05:56:20ID: 10522516

Make sure you have at least 100 file handles available in the config.nt of each PC for FoxPro 2.6.  That will be located in the System32 folder of each PC's main Windows directory.  Just use a text editor and change the default files = 40 to at least files = 100.  Reboot.

Also, I/O Operation Failures many times have to do with the development PC that was used.  See the following Ms KB article on this issue:

The "Picture too big" type error has usually been related to compressed BMP images.  I suppose it could relate to something else that is similar, but that is the general area of interest that generates that type error.

in Windows XP you need to right click on My Computer and then choose Properties/Advances/Environment Variables

In the System Variables put:
FILES 100 or 150 or any number you feel that your program needs.

This is previously known was CONFIG.SYS

by: gtkfreakPosted on 2004-03-05 at 10:50:06ID: 10525571

In Config.nt
put FILES=150
BUFFERS=100
and save it.

We had this problem even before XP with a full-screen (ZOOM WINDOW MAX) app that used a small bmp as the background filler (DEFINE WINDOW ... FILL FILE ...) on the login page. Took that out and no problems since.

FoxPro for Windows does not handle large bitmaps (pixels) or bitmaps with more than 16 colors very well. Try to avoid them as much as you can. If you wish to use a repetitive or tiling bitmap, use a 50x50 one.

The real answer re the I/O problem is to make sure you have a CD in the client's CD drive. The old foxpro embedded drive letters as part of the search path when the application gets compiled, and to remove them we use a small utility called fixapp (you're welcome to a copy). If that works you know its right.

The picture corruption is due to the flakey way foxpro handles graphic files - either get rid of them or reduce the colour depth and recompile the app or redistribute the new graphic files if they are "excluded" from the project.

I have around 200 small bitmaps for my FoxPro for Windows 2.6 application. They are 16 colors and are embedded in the application. Most of them are 23x23 and a few are 100x50 and a couple of backgrounds are 50x50. Very small and I still get this error. I trap it using ON ERROR and in the error handler I just issue a RETRY. If still occuring a lot I let the application wait a few seconds before retrying. This is how I handled it. Also FPW26 does not handle large bitmaps or bitmaps with a big color depth very well.
