All I want is to open other application files. e.g. test.txt, test.xls. After the files are opened, test.txt is still opened under notepad, test.xls is still opended under Mircrosoft Exel.

I don't want to interact with the files' data.

You can still use OLE automation to open one of those files.  There is nothing that says you can't just open the file and not interact with it while you're in there.
