ODBC driver and access via ADO ? Why not dnload and use VFPOLEDB driver instead.

What version of VFP are you using?  The last version that MS wanted us to use ODBC only with was VFP6.  An OLE DB Provider was shipped with VFP7 and VFP8 and the latest driver is currently available for free download from MS.

I am not using VFP, I am wrinitng an app using Borland Cbuilder 6. I have previously downloaded the OLE DB Provider and I
use the ODBC system control panel to set up a connection but I continue to get the error:

"You must first install the current version of Visual Foxpro ODBC Driver. Go to http://msdn.microsoft/vfoxpro/downloads. Select Product updates, then Visual Foxpro ODBC Driver."

I could be a little dense but I see the updates VFP drivers on the ODBC Panels but any time I select them I get the error. I tried
this also on another XP machine and got the same results. Thanks for any help, don't know where esle to look.

What version of VFP are the tables and/or database you are trying to attach to?

by: learn1Posted on 2004-07-03 at 16:38:26ID: 11465701

I think they are written in 6 or 6.5. I also need access to the index fields otherwise I would
just use a Dbase driver as this is a read only application to serve up web pages.

You should be able to use the OLE DB Provider for VFP to get to that data.  And, unlike the ODBC driver, you shouldn't have to use the ODBC Data Source Administrator to get to set it up and get to it.  That's why I posted a setup string as my second URL reference above for you to issue the proper sequence to get to it.  Also, the third reference is a very good reference on the details of using the OLE DB Provider for VFP.

Here they are once again:

OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro
http://www.able-consulting.com/MDAC/ADO/Connection/OLEDB_Providers.htm#OLEDBProviderForVisualFoxPro

OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/fox7help/html/dggrfOLEDBProviderforVisualFoxPro.asp

If I were you, I'd skip the ODBC driver altogether and move on up to only the OLE DB Provider for VFP and just concentrate on getting the connection string working to get to the data.

Sounds like a good starting place. A question, should I see a seperate OLE DB Provider on the ODBC ADMIN panel for VFP. I see the drivers as part of the ODBC but not as a seperate server like SQL. I think I can also access the data by using Borlands BDE but that is not very good for use in web apps, too large and much more overhead.

Since the OLE DB Provider is really a superset of older ODBC, no you shouldn't worry about seeing it in the ODBC Data Source Administrator stuff under Control Panel.  On my WinXP, the OLE DB Provider is a registered shared common component located at c:\program files\common files\system\ole db.  The ODBC stuff is located at a totally separate location with mine at c:\program files\common files\ODBC\Data Sources.  If you peek at the registry with REGEDIT, you'll see those references to the OLE DB Provider for VFP if the DLL has been installed and registered properly.

Trying to further clear this up, consider what I've mentioned as similar to a DSN less Connection string under ODBC where there, too, you don't need to setup a DSN in the Control Panel ODBC Data Source Administrator as you have been trying to do.

ODBC DSN Less Connections to Visual FoxPro
http://www.able-consulting.com/MDAC/ADO/Connection/ODBC_DSNLess.htm#ODBCDriverForVisualFoxPro

Even with that under ODBC, you don't need to bother with that extra step of the DSN setup because you are passing that information via the connection string method which circumvents all that.  The OLE DB Provider connection string method does the same and uses the latest and greatest connectivity driver for getting to all VFP data, regardless of version.  If at a later time you wanted to get to VFP8 (or even VFP9 which will ship late in this year), you won't be able to use the ODBC driver to get to that data.  So, using the VFP OLE DB Provider for VFP puts you ahead of the curve where you won't ever have to look back with regret.

Once again I say if you want to access via ADO use VFPOLEDB driver. ADO uses OLEDB and native OLEDB driver for VFP is VFPOLEDB driver. No mess with the ODBC driver. ODBC driver also has limited capabilities compared to OLEDB driver for VFP. Either it's ASP, Delphi, C etc it's as simple as having a connectionstring as :
strCon = "Provider=VFPOLEDB;Datasource = c:myPath\mydatabase.dbc"

While I'm building tables for a new pos system at work, I have encounter a problem communicating to VFP tables using OBDC. And as I find out last night, VFP will give an error message when trying to connect remotely to a table that contains auto incremental fields. That is perhaps the error you are experiencing, it may not be the ODBC driver itself, but the auto incremental fields on some tables you are trying to connect. Therefore I would suggest to connect to any other table that may not have any relationship to auto-id generator.
