Question

CANNOT INSERT EXPLICIT VALUE INTO TIMESTAMP

Asked by: epicazo

TWO PART QUESTION:
(1)I use a SAVEREC function to add a new record for all my forms.  However, the problem I am having is that
I am getting this error message (on some forms),

Connectivity error: [Microsoft][ODB SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot insert an explicit value into a timestamp column.  Use insert with a column list to exclude the timestemp column, or insert a DEFAULT into timestamp column.

I know that this is asking me to use INSERT instead of APPEND BLANK, but if this is centralized how could I do this?  Or i guess I could insert into the TIMESTAMP a default, I do this a the back-end or at VFP?

(2)BTW, what is this timestamp column for?  Does it get updated by VFP or SQL05.  I think this was added during upsize.

FUNCTION saverec

            APPEND BLANK
            m.adding = .F.

FYI:

I am using remote views to connect to SQL server 2005.

But its nature, just like an autoincremented value in an autoincremented field, a timestamp value is one that you don't explicitly generate but is generated by the system when a new row is added.  Try your operation without referencing that field from the VFP Remote View.

Do I need these TIMESTAMP columns?  and could I delete them?

If you want to track when a user makes a change or adds a new row, they are helpful.  But, if that is too much information or overkill, you don't need them.  I thought you hinted you wanted that information in a previous message a week or two ago.  It's not necessary to have that information.  But, again, it's up to you as to how important it is to know when something was added or changed.

Normally, I don't track that kind of thing in my apps because it is overkill.  Occasionally, I do track it only to group things together as a batch where a certain session's transactions can get tracked together and limited to a specific report.  One example might be someone shipping items from an order.  if the order allows for a partial shipment, you can allow a smaller group of items to get printed and labelled in the database as being shipped.  With the date/time stamp, those items will show as being shipped at a specific moment.  If an item comes in right after that shipment and still can be shipped the same day, then that partial shipment gets a newer, but different, date/time stamp for that day, and still allows a printout that shows just that one new item for that same day with the later time portion being the new batch identifier.  If I didn't have the time in there, all of the items for that day would shgow up for today's date.  Of course, I wouldn't want the previous items that were already labelled as shipped, just the latest ones.  And, I could have used a simple batch identifier as well which would just assign a number for each day's shipments.  In this case, I chose to use the date/time stamp to nail down when a day's work was marked as shipped in the system.

I hope this gives you some explanation as to why you might or might not use the date/time stamp for anything.
