Question

tableupdate

Asked by: leemarc

If there any real difference between TABLEUPDATE(.T.) and Tableupdate(0,.T.,'inventory')
will they both commit the changes for the current record? [multilocks is on and CURSORSETPROP('Buffering', 3, 'inventory')

The reason I ask is that in VFP 6 i coded my app with TABLEUPDATE(.T.) and left it that way. IN very 8 I changed some to  TABLEUPDATE(.T.,.F.,"inventory") - unsure why

Now as I read the help i find I should use TABLEUPDATE( 0, .T., "inventory" ) to force a commit to the current row

I am confused here.  I hesitate to change the program but I wonder which is best to use?

I believe the function was updated with the extra parameters to better handle transactions where multiple tables were involved.

does this mean the old way could possible cause table as to not be updated correctly? or worse does the fact that I have go ahead and changed to the new parameters cause them to not update correctly. Of course I already made the changes and there does not yet seem to be any issues.

I am attempting to ensure old style free tables will update correctly so I have used TABLEUPDATE(0,.T.,alias name)
where 0 = operate on the current record, .T. force the commit and of course the table to operate on.

No, the old way is fine-- it;s just the new way offers more control over multiple tables instead of having to be sure each table you may want to update is set as the current table first.  With the extra parameters, there is no need to make each open table that needs to be updated to be set as the currently selected one before that can happen.

Here's a short quote from the FoxWiki on TableUpdate:

"It is advised that the alias name ALWAYS be supplied when using TableUpdate because in event driven applications it is not necessarily known what the current work area will be when the code executes. By supplying the alias name one knows that the update will occur in the correct work area."

i think my concern was when i used
TABLEUPDATE(.T., .F., aliasname)  the 1st parameter basically was the wrong type (boolean) instead of integer
did it work because in boolean terms .T. is 1 and .F. is 0 - so all it really did was act as if I had entered a 1?
