back button failure in IE8 on Windows 7

I'm having a problem with IE8 on Windows 7 (RC) When I open new instance of IE it all works fine. However after a short while the back button stops working. (clicking on the button, using backspace and also the back button built into Lenovo keyboards). Also at the same time all favorites stop working too and the foward button also. On page links that would normally open a new tab or window also stop working. If I open another instance of IE it works for a bit until it too fails.
Any ideas? I can't seem to re-install as it comes with the OS and using another browser isn't ideal as IE is standard at work.
