Best way to upgrade from Microsoft CRM 3 Small Business Edition to version 4

Hi Experts,

Im needing to upgrade from Microsoft CRM 3 Small Business Edition to CRM 4 Professional.

Ive got a new Dell Server running Windows 2008 Standard edition, and SQL 2005.  The idea is to make the new server a dedicated CRM 4.0 server.  Currently CRM 3 is running on the SBS 2003 Premium edition (not R2)

My question is what is the best way to upgrade to the new server.

I was hoping to use the redployment tool to move CRM 3 onto the new server, then run the upgrade to 4 - but the SBS licensing does not let me do this and CRM 3 install stops when entering the license keyStart Free Trial

Hi,

You could either do a CRM 4 upgrade on the SBS server and then move the databases to the new server and install CRM 4 on it. Or you could redeploy CRM 3 on the new server using the CRM Professional 90 day trial key, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7d418781-69ad-422d-92fa-87fdb2538e2c&DisplayLang=en and then upgrade to CRM 4 on the new server.

Either way, make sure you have a up to date backup of the current CRM 3.0 system.

Thanks for that.  Issue with your solution is that i cannot run the upgrade on SBS Premium edition - NOT R2 i.e not SQL 2005, and because it is CRM 3 SBS Edition i cannot install on the new Windows 2008 server due to licensing restriction with CRM 3 for SBS.

You should be able to download the CRM Server software from the URL in my previous post and use the trial license key on the same page. It should upgrade the database accordingly. If there is still an issue you can replace the license key in the license table within the database with the trial license key prior to performing the installation.

It actually didnt work.  I cannot redeploy - it fails on the license.

I cannot use the Pro key to upgrade the SBS key :(

Any ideas

Did you change the license key in the database ? in the license table ? before attempting to redeploy ?

no change to license keys.  Tried to update the license using the deployment wizards to pro on the live crm 3.0 system

I would just put the database on the new server, change the key in the database and then install crm 3 with the same key and then you can run the in place upgrade to CRM 4
