The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot connect to Microsoft CRM 4.0 with the CRM Outlook Client
Hello,

I have CRM 4.0 and all of its prerequisites running off a virtual Windows Server 2003.  I can connect and use the web client and all of its features, with no problems.  Everything works fine on that end; however, after I installed the CRM client for Outlook (on a different machine), I have the following error in a popup dialog during configuration.

"The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized"

Upon clicking the OK button, another dialog box pops up with "Mandatory updates for Microsoft Dynamics CRM could not be applied successfully.  Try running the application again."

I have tried both ways of connecting (through My Company and An online service provider), but the result is the same every time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Are you able to use the web client from the client machine where you installed the Outlook client?

04.14.2008 at 05:49AM PDT, ID: 21349506
yes, i can use the web client from the client machine where the Outlook client is installed.   From other computers on our network, too, no problem.  Just can't get past the Outlook configuration.

Did you use the IFD (Internet Facing Deployment) installation?

I have seen that the Discovery URL is case sensitive.  Your computer is on the network when performing the configuration?

I would try :
http://<server>:5555 (or whatever the port is)
then http://FQDNServer:5555
then http://crm.domain.com/

04.14.2008 at 08:36AM PDT, ID: 21350936
I'm embarrassed to say i don't know what IFD is.  I don't recall that as an option, so i'd guess that i'm not using it

04.14.2008 at 08:37AM PDT, ID: 21350943
oh and yes, the computer is on the network when performing configuration

04.14.2008 at 08:39AM PDT, ID: 21350954
I know the address is right, because if i change it just a bit (for testing), i don't get the unauthorized message, I get a server cannot be found error.  So the address I'm using is right.  I just can't in during configuration of the outlook client

04.14.2008 at 08:59AM PDT, ID: 21351115
Some more info...
I tried

http://servername:5555

and received a different alert, "Unable to connect to server" - not cool, but at least different from the previous messages.  Is still followed by the updates alert.

04.14.2008 at 09:03AM PDT, ID: 21351145
ah, just found out that regardless of the port number i put.  any arbitrary number delivers that message.

04.15.2008 at 10:05AM PDT, ID: 21360515
anyone?

Whats happening is that your Microsoft CRM 4.0 server is not properly setup, but with three quick steps, everything will start working the way you want it to. When we move through theis process, you will need to keep something in mind... the external URL for your CRM site isn't what you think it is.

Let say you configure your CRM site to use servername.yourdomain.com. Your CRM site is called MyCrm. Intenally, that would allow you to type http://servername.yourdomain.com/MyCrm to access your installation. What happens is when you try to access thast site through the Internet, it redirects you to a new site named MyCrm.mydomain.com. Thats when you get your error message. Let fix this...

First, download the Microsoft CRM 4.0 IFDTool from the Microsoft Support website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948779). Follow the diretions in the KBV article to extract the tool and start it.

With the tool launched, enter the following information:

Authentication Strategy: IFD + OnPremise
IFD Internal IP and Subnet: <enter your actual internal IP address and subnet for your CRM server>
IFD Domain Scheme: <select either HTTP or HTTPS>
IFD APP Root Domain: <enter your domain, i.e. mydomain.com>

Select File, Apply Changes from the Menu Bar to save these changes.

Now, go to your Internet Information Server Manager in Admin Tools, find your CRM Website, right-click and select Properties. On thew Website tab, select Advanced next to IP Address and select New. Enter your External CRM site name, i.e. MyCRM.mydomain.com. Select OK to close all the properties windows.

Lastly, we need to create a new enternal DNS entry pointing MyCRM.mydomain.com to your external IP Address of this site.

That's it! Try to re-configure your Outllo client. It should work for you.

For more information, review the Internet Facing Depoyment Scenarios guide at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3861e56d-b5ed-4f7f-b2fd-5a53bc71dafc&displaylang=en.

I'd love to try this out, it makes sense; however when i download the tool and run it (followed the instructions in the link), I received one of thosee Send Error to microsoft dialog boxes.  I tried looking for an alternative version but alas.  Any thoughts?

scratch my last post.  i don't even want to say what i did wrong, its so embarrassing.  Anyway, will try out your suggestion, PC, and get back to you.
thanks

I don't know if you've resolved this issue, however I was having a similar problem.  Using Wireshark, we detirmined that the CRM client was passing across:
*local machine*\*username*
instead of
*domain*\*username*

http://www.crmwatcher.com/2006/01/outlook-client-connecting-from-other.html had the solution to my problem, unfortunately I didn't install our CRM system and I clearly know a darn sight less than pcteamadmin,  so I should imagine his explanation is far more likely.  Good luck!
