The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Remote Access solutions

Environment:
 - Windows Server 2003
 - Microsoft Dynamics 6.5/7.0
 - Microsoft SQL 2000/2005
 - T1 point-to-point

Question
We are acquiring a company that is using Microsoft Dynamics SL.  The Dynamics box will be hosted at our headquarters, 30 miles away from where half the users will be accessing it, the warehouse.

Their IT guy said that they will need Citrix to access Dynamics from the warehouse, because the T1 point-to-point connection is not fast enough.

Is there any validity to this?  Does the program do such heavy database calls that it would potentially clog the point-to-point and make usability minimal?  If so, what connection would we need?

I am trying to stay away from Citrix, as it is not the cheapest thing out there?  Are there any other solutions?

Thank you.

Although not familiar with MS Dynamics, we run several pretty hefty back end DB's off of an AS400, and a DB2 server.  We tested a MS Terminal Server and we had to move to Citrix to allow our outside offices to connect and use the DB's.  So, although I cannot vouch for your specific situation, I do know that Citrix is a better way to go if you are going to access large DBs..  It seems to allow better throughput..    If not, then I would think that MS TS would work too, at a smaller cost to your firm...

Thanks Fatal Exception.

Can you give me a little more detail on the size of your database?  Our largest table is our Sales History Detail, which is about 2.1 million rows.  Our other tables are small in comparison, such as the Customer table that is 20,000 rows.

Do you see us running into the same problem you did with MS TS?  We just got our Citrix quote at ~$20k to implement, then $7,500 per year for maintenance/licensing costs.

Ironically we are running an AS400 right now at the parent company, and switching to Dynamics.

We are a Dynamics SL shop and I have used SL through Remote Desktop and Citrix and it works equally well in both situations.  Our Citrix environmrnt is quite old though which probably allows RDP to keep up.  I would think the Citrix solution would be the most effective solution for a large DB.

Our database is about 10Gb in size, not sure on the overall row count, but it seems to do just fine over a VPN connection (Internet into HQ is 768k)

The more I think about this, the more I believe that the reason we went with Citrix was a combination of the number of users accessing the DB, and the Table Sizes (this was 4 years ago)..  I am not the DB admin, but I do know the sizes are very, very large..  (if it were not too late, I would ask)..  We had over 500 users accessing the DB at one time, before the economy went south on us..  (we are a regional home builder, in business since 1952)  I would wager if we were to do it again, we would probably be able to just go with RDP instead of spending the additional on Citrix..

Thank you guys for the feedback.

I believe I will attempt to run a strong MS TS box for starters.  If it ends up being a problem with productivity I will just add Citrix on top.

that is the ticket!  you can always upgrade!

Thanks, and have a great day!
