Question

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 Upgrade issues

Asked by: PortableLighting

Platform: SBS2003 R2 w/ SQL2005 SP2
CRM3 has Update Rollup 2 (KB927751) applied

When we upgrade from Microsoft CRM 3 to Dynamics CRM 4 the upgrade appears to work smoothly (crm40svrsetup.log shows no errors), but after the "install finish reboot" the CRM is inaccessible with the following error appearing in the web browser:

No Microsoft Dynamics CRM user exists with the specified domain name and user ID

This message appears for both "http://server_name:5555/" and "http://server_name:5555/organization_name/".

Google shows others have had this problem but I am unable to find a viable solution.

If anyone has encountered this problem or has any ideas on how to fix this issue please respond. Our accountant is getting very anxious to have the new CRM4 installed very soon.

Other notes:
I have recently built a VMWare test server with a P2V of our SBS because of software upgrade issues.

Have you tried reinstalling as a "repair"?  I've seen that this can be caused by the metabase not being created correctly and apparently doing a repair installation fixes that.

Thanks for the long awaited response.
I have tried doing a complete re-install and selecting the previous deployment within the setup.
This did not seem to change any of the behavior.

Are you suggesting to use the "repair" option?

Also, in the CRM deployment manager, it shows our organization as "pending".
It also says there are "0" licenses installed.

Now to clarify we are using the 90 day trial license that is supposed to work until the "real" version gets shipped to us from our re-seller. Supposedly we are going to be receiving our "real" license and media soon.

At this point we are hoping the retail version will save us from this headache, but after each upgrade failure, I remain skeptical.

As a another possibility, do you know of a way to export all of the CRM 3 data, do a fresh install of CRM 4 and import the data into the fresh one?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sure... just export all data to a .csv file and then import it into your CRM 4 installation.

If you have customizations you can export those and import them as well.

Have you tried DOMAIN\username?

by: PortableLightingPosted on 2008-05-22 at 07:09:38ID: 21623934

TechSoEasy:
We received our "real" media (with embedded licensing) yesterday.
I tried upgrading CRM3 with it (new CRM4 DVD) on the P2VM test server and received the same results as the trial version:

Browser: http://SBSserver_Name:5555/Organization_Name
Yields: Server Error in '/' Application - Invalid object name 'Entity'.

Browser: http://SBSserver_Name:5555/Anyhing_else
Yields: No Microsoft Dynamics CRM user exists with the specified domain name and user ID

Deployment Manager shows:
Deployment Administrators -> Name = Domain_Name\Administrator

Organizations -> Name = ourOrganization_Name , Friendly name = ourOrganization_FName , Status = Pending

Servers -> Name = ourSBServer_Name , Status = "Enabled", Version = "4.0.7333.3" , Roles = "Full Server"

License -> License Type = "Professional" , Number of Licensed Users = "0" , License Key = 20_Digit_Number

I will try doing an "Add/Remove - Repair" on it today to see if it will fix it.

I suggested the possibility of a data-export / fresh CRM 4 install / data import scenario to our CFO, but he is concerned we would loose our attached "notes" (documents attached to the customer files), as at first glance, seems there is no easy way to export these.

Does a procedure to export "all" of the data including attached documents, exist?

chd2:
Quote: "Have you tried DOMAIN\username?"
Please be more specific here. I am not sure what you are referring to. Their is no login context for the CRM that requires a domain\username that I am aware of. All of my testing is done on the server, logged in as the domain admin.

Thanks,
-Chris

I applied the "repair" option from the DVD and everything stayed the same except in the Deployment Manager, the server changed to "Disbaled".

I changed "Disbled" to "Enabled", but it failed to change the behavior.

"Browser: http://SBSserver_Name:5555/Organization_Name

That indicates a .NET version error.  What's the FULL text of that error message?  Does it show you that its using .NET 3.0?

OK at the very bottom it shows:

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.832; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.832

Does CRM 4 need .NET 3?

by: PortableLightingPosted on 2008-05-23 at 10:45:52ID: 21634162

I cannot figure out how to get the CRM 4 to use the .NET 3 framework.

IIS only allows me to choose .NET 1 or 2, not 3.

I have tried repairing the .NET3.0 and registering it using "aspnet_regiis -i" and "servicemodelreg -i".

But I syill can only configure the CRM website with .NET1or2, and the web eorror page still says using .NET 2

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2008-05-23 at 17:22:01ID: 21636934

Sorry, I was unclear... I was wondering if it said 3.0 and that is what was causing the error.  It should be 2.0.

Any ideas on import / export of attached files?

by: PortableLightingPosted on 2008-06-27 at 06:58:11ID: 21883756

I have an open case with Microsoft's CRM4.0 tech support on this issue.
Of course the case has been oper for several weeks now without resolution.
They were at least able to verify that it is not an SQL problem.

Once this issue has been resolved I will post the results here, if anyone is interested.

Any news on this issue ?

by: PortableLightingPosted on 2008-07-08 at 07:12:33ID: 21954004

Microsoft is still working on it.

They thought it might be a customization issue, so I exported (and uploaded) our customizations for them to test. But the customizations upgraded without issue.

I am now uploading our CRM3 DB to them so they can test the upgrade and pinpoint the failure.

So hopefully there will be a resolution soon. I will post the results.

Ok, after a long a drawn out process with Microsoft's GP Dynamics support, we have finally upgraded our our Microsoft CRM 3.0 to 4.0!

It seems that the reinstall of the CRM3.0 (from the first upgrade failure) might have not reinstalled cleanly. This seemed to leave large portions of the database missing or corrupt, although it seemed to be functioning well for us.

The trick here was to use the CRM re-deployment tool on our existing database to repair it for the upgrade.

I created a redeployment document to follow along to make sure all of the steps are followed and in the correct order. Here are the steps I used:

CRM4.0 Upgrade Path

1.      Create Database backup files for both Organization_Name_METABASE & Organization_Name_MSCRM
2.      Delete MSCRM_Config database from SQL (if it exists)
3.      Uninstall Microsoft CRM-Exchange E-Mail Router
4.      Uninstall Microsoft CRM 3.0.
5.      Reboot the server.
6.      Restore the 3.0 METABASE and MSCRM databases.
7.      Install Redeployment Wizard from the CRM 3.0 media.
8.      Create a new AD OU to use for the Security Groups that are created during redeployment. This is only to make sure there is no confusion between the old and new groups.

Steps 9 & 10 were only necessary because I was getting a "duplicate SQL server SPN" error in the EDW (Environmental Diagnostics Wizard). Ignore these if it is not a problem.

9.      Load SupportTools from CD2 of SBS Setup Disc.
10.      Delete the duplicate SPN from the SQL Server and Administrator Account using the ADSIEDIT.msc tool. (Delete MSSQLSvc/SQLServerName.DomainName.local:UnusedPortNumber)

11.      Launch the Redeployment Wizard.
12.      Choose the SQL server and select the restored 3.0 database. Should be named Org_Name_MSCRM and click Next.
13.      The Organization name should be populated, click Next.
14.      Browse out to the Organization Unit that was created in step 8 and click Next.
15.      Select Automap users and map by Active Directory account name. Choose Next.
16.      Users should all be mapped correctly. Click Next.
17.      This will give a quick overview of the choices made previously. Click Start.
18.      Start the CRM 3.0 Installation and enter license key. Click Next.
19.      Accept Terms and click Next.
20.      Choose Custom Setup.
21.      Enter Organization Name as shown in Step 7. Click Next
22.      Click Next on Customer experience.
23.      Click Next on installation directory.
24.      Select the Create new Web Site and click Next.
25.      Select SQL Server, Choose Connect to existing databases and the DB's should auto populate. Click Next.
26.      Type in the Report Server URL and click Next.
27.      Leave Security account as Network Service and click Next.
28.      Choose Exchange Server and click Next.
29.      If you do not have any errors at the EDW (ignore database version mismatches) click Next.
30.      This will give the summary page. Click on Install.
31.      Once the installation completes reboot and cancel out of the initial setup.
32.      Launch the webclient and take the Administrator account out of Restricted Access Mode.
33.      Run " SP_fulltext_database enable " against the MSCRM database to enable full-text indexing.
34.      Create the full text index on the documentindex table.
a. Open the SQL Server Management Studio and expand Organization_Name_MSCRM database. Expand the view and click on tables.
b. Right-click on the DocumentIndex table, point to Full Text Index Table and point to Define Full-Text Indexing on a Table. This will open the Full Text Indexing Wizard. On the welcome page, select Next.
c. Select the Unique Index of PK_DocumentIndex. Click Next.
d. Select the Title, KeyWords, and Search Text columns and then click Next.
e. Track Changed Automatically and click Next
f. Type ftcat_documentindex for the Full-text catalog and Select Next.
g. You do not need to select or create a population schedule. Select Next to bypass this window.
h. Click Finish to complete the creation of the Full-Text Index.
35.      Remove old CRM4.0 setup logs
36.      Verify (or start) the SQL Reporting services is started
37.      Begin upgrade
38.      Reboot
39.      Test the installation
40.      Examine Setup Logs for errors

Success!

If anyone has any questions please feel free to post here and I will answer as best as I can.
