Question

Email not "sending" from within Dynamics CRM 4.0

Asked by: AlvarezLouie

My configuration: Dynamics CRM 4.0 w/ SQL Server 2005 installed on server #1, MS Exchange 2003 with CRM E-mail Router on server #2. My setup: CRM works great, have data entered, customized fields, everything tests great along with my installed SQL Server, Exchange is installed and works perfectly as well via the OWA and Outlook, no hiccups.

Then I installed the CRM e-mail router and thats where the fun began. Tried on 3 servers, 2 workstations and never could get it to work properly, finally stumbled upon a Dynamics CRM engineer's video tutorials that step by step showed me the online community and books were wrong. Followed the steps and lo and behold the Email Router tested successfully. Finally! Just for chuckles I followed another video and created a forward box which also tested successfully. Now the entire configuration works perfectly, or so I thought.

Outgoing emails will not send out from within CRM, incoming works fine and is also tracked properly within the account the email belongs to, but when sending email NOTHING. After sending an email the History shows the "Email" has "completed", but to confirm by opening the email the messages in the highlit bar begin: "This message has not yet been submitted for delivery. For more information see help." then followed by "This message has not yet been submitted for delivery. # attempts have been made so far." Shortly followed by the final dreaded message (I believe after 9 or 10 attempts): "This message delivery has failed. It must be resubmitted for any further processing"

Mind you I've configured the users to utilize the email router AND forward box but get same message either way. I've also properly configured the Tools|Options|Email|Credentials for email routing but still same message. I've tried every solution online and still no outgoing. FYI I also have email router restarting every 10 minutes, as some have claimed this works, not in my case :(

So with that description the CRM, SQL, Exchange, Email router all are installed correctly but obviously something is missing or configured incorrectly within CRM. I asume this but just don't know and after two weeks I am at wits end and desparately need some help. Any suggestions in this expert community?

OK, so when you click test Access within the CRM Email Router configuration, the Outgoing is Succeeding?

If you send an email from within a Contact to a known good email address, this is the behavior you get?

How about if you send one to a User (send to yourself from within the web client)?

What version of IE are you using? (sounds like a strange question, but I have seen some weirdness with IE6 and I think there is a hotfix for problems related to IE6 and CRM4)

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 08:37:09ID: 21917488

Yes Outgoing is successful for both Email Router and Forward Box with CRM Email Router configuration.

Created an account for myself with my Gmail, AOL, Hotmail accounts to test and they all give me the same error message.

I haven't tried to send to a user, will try that right now.

Using version 7 and also IE tab within Firefox, both give the same message.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 08:40:24ID: 21917536

Sent email to user, since there isn't a history for users don't know what the message is but needless to say the user never received the email.

Hmm, OK, Event Logs?  Either server?

How about Antivirus (this is all from the MS playbook) but I wonder if something is stopping it.

    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.crm&tid=8e427cc6-f88a-4a56-b2c3-321418398718
Make sure you look at the MORE page.

So restarting the Service doesn't kick them out?

How about System Settings | Outlook - what setting is for sending email out? (default is 10 minutes).

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 10:35:19ID: 21918750

Nothing in Events Log been through both servers. No antivirus, have it turned off assuming this could have been a problem. CRM Email Router is set to restart every 10 minutes and that hasn't helped. Don't know where your referring System Settings | Outlook at, looked on Exchange server and CRM server. Where should I be looking?

BTW been to the link you suggested many times, thats where I got the crm restart idea from. None of that seems to make any difference.

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 12:05:19ID: 21919555

Within the web client, go to Settings | Administration | System Settings | Outlook tab.

I might also try to cycle the Outgoing Method for a few users (switch it to Outlook Client, Save and Close, then back to Email Router).  Then send another clean email.

May want to establish CRM Tracing for a few moments during the email send and see if you can find anything.  This is best done when little OTHER traffic will be on the system.  Do a search for CRMDiagTurbo as there is a version out for 4.0.  Excellent resource to help you turn on Trace.

It will create several files and they fill up quickly, so basically get to the point of sending the email, turn on tracing, send the email, and then stop trace about 10 seconds later.  If nothing in the logs, you may have to set it and wait for 10 minutes or so for the router to restart.  (BTW, probably can turn that off if it isn't helping).

Finally getting somewhere. Stumbled upon a video explaining how to activate log files in CRM 4. This has been most helpful as to showing me why my emails won't send. Now I cannot seem to figure out why this all important error can be resolved:

System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Server does not support secure connections.

Where do I set this? In Exchange, if so where? In MSCRM, if so where?

Its like it THINKS it is talking to Exchange on 465 (I assume your Outgoing Advanced Settings aren't strange or atypical?)

For grins try changing TO 465 for the port and test the access and see if that is the error it gives you?

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:08:33ID: 21921308

Also, do you have any kind of anti-spam or blacklist checking going?

Relay is open on the Exchange/SMTP for the CRM server? (it would have to be to work, but check anyway)

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:12:46ID: 21921333

Hmmm, I searched for 465 but don't see it, plus don't know where this should be changed. Also where are you referring to the Outgoing Advanced Settings?

No anti-spam or blacklist activated and Relay is open for CRM server and I just added my own user account just for the hell of it.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:14:52ID: 21921344

Adding my user account did nothing, searching for Outgoing Advanced Settings.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:19:42ID: 21921375

I probably should mention I have outlook on my desktop that connects to exchange server and all incoming/outgoing email has always worked.

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:21:09ID: 21921381

Outgoing Configuration Profile - Advanced Settings....

Outlook Tracked Email will use Outlook to send, you are primarily dealing with mail created by workflow or from web client

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 15:30:30ID: 21921427

There's Tools|Options|E-Mail in CRM but after searching Exchange and CRM don't have a clue where Outgoing Configuration Profile is located :(

For this amount if time I wish I could bump your points up to 1000 or more.

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 16:11:15ID: 21921622

Don't sweat the points, I enjoy the challenge :D

You'd be looking in the Email Router Configuration Wizard for the Outgoing Configuration Profile.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 16:49:09ID: 21921781

Cool, your a good guy, really appreciate the help here. Sorry for the delay had to drop my daughter off. OK, CRM Email Router, got it. Just changed the port to 465 and ran the test, immediately got the following error message: Outgoing Status: Failure - An error occurred while checking the connection to e-mail server mail.lecme.com. "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it." Changed it back to 25 and it was successful, decided to turn off SSL for the hell of it and is still tested successful. So let's see what happens in CRM sending out an email?

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:03:12ID: 21921832

Damn, forgot about the Use SSL on the Outgoing....that is probably it!

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:07:57ID: 21921850

THANK YOU WilyGuy. Emails are now going out. After changing the port back to 25 tried the SSL unchecked and lo and behold the emails are outgoing. Woohoo! After two weeks on my own you pointed me in the right direction with the suggestion to search CRMDiagTurbo which led me to the Log File. Without that would never have know where to even begin, after two weeks I hadn't moved from the same error problems. Anyway after you suggested changing the port to 465 that's when I noticed the SSL was checked. Once again "I THANK YOU" great job and you were up for the challenge and successfully conquered it. You the man, if I could do 2000 points it would be done, well done, well earned.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:11:24ID: 21921862

So now that emails are going out just have to make sure that the end person is recieving them, don't see why not since Exchange has always worked via OWA and Outlook. Thanks again. Recap for people reading this thread:

Turn on LogFile. Instructions here: http://blogs.msdn.com/benlec/archive/2008/03/25/how-to-implement-logging-for-the-microsoft-crm-4-0-e-mail-connector.aspx then if your getting the same error message as I was: System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Server does not support secure connections, turn off SSL within CRM Email Router Outgoing profile in Configuration Profiles.

I'm turning off the auto start/stop of CRM Email Router Service to see if it is necessary any longer.

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:11:35ID: 21921863

    Glad we figured it out.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:14:39ID: 21921872

Don't delete, leave open for the others with this same problem. After two weeks and finally coming deciding to use Experts Exchange the solution was finally discovered. The EE membership is truly worth it and I would hate my last two weeks and all this afternoon to see this solution deleted or closed away.

    by: WilyGuyPosted on 2008-07-02 at 17:34:46ID: 21921935

I think you need to accept an answer in order for it to close properly.

    by: AlvarezLouiePosted on 2008-07-03 at 06:39:56ID: 31472426

Great job, the diag tool led to the log file which finally showed the error being made which led us to the SSL needing to be disabled.
