Does the old CRM still work with the new DB offline?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsWe have a full copy of Dynmaics CRM 4 installed on a W2003 box which has been working fine. We took a back up to installl the database on a different server, and after a bit of hassle this worked (initially the target server started using the database instance located on the Workgroup server).
The position now is that the 5 users that used to show up in the Deplyoment Wized have disappeared. The user count is now 0 and we can't seem to solve this problem. We have entered the product key and run the registration wizard.
Users attempting to log in get the message "Record is Unavailable. The requested record was not found or you do not have sufficient permssions to view it."
Any suggestions?

Thanks for input WilyGuy. We will try your suggestions later...
Not sure what you mean about multiple environment. We are not trying to do anything wierd - we just wanted to take a copy of the organisation database from the Workgroup version and install it on a full Enterprise version - this was a test to make sure we could do it when the time came.
Don't understand your second question (Does the old CRM still work with the new DB offline?).
You indicated you had problems "(initially the target server started using the database instance located on the Workgroup server)" and was trying to determine if you meant the Workgroup server that you initially setup was pointing to the copied DB.
Since I know now you have an Enterprise License....if the above two things fail, you can try to update the license in the initial environment as well.
So Production is currently Workgroup?
You needed more users so you are going to Enterprise and you haven't got the license yet, so you went Trial License?
Have you installed the Enterprise yet?
I would suggest for future moves:
1- take the workgroup offline and make a backup of the ORG_MSCRM DB
2- Restore the DB to SQL on the server where the enterprise is located (as is the MSCRM_CONFIG DB).
3- Import the DB in the Deployment Manager on the Enterprise CRM. (it should then give you two there)
4- Test the Enterprise version (note it won't be the default there, so you will need to either remove the default or use the org name in the URL )
Understand further that if you don't get your real license before the expiration of the trial license, you won't be able to go back to workgroup with the database. (Assuming you want to move to the Enterprise as soon as it is working?)

Not sure if the two typical methods work in Workgroup Edition (not meant to be deployed to multiple environments)
1 - Stop CRM and Async Service, Backup both DBs (MSCRM_CONFIG and <ORG>_MSCRM)
Restore DBs to new SQL server
Build new CRM server using the "Use Existing" DBs method
2 - Build New CRM Server pointing to New SQL server
Same backup and restore as before JUST ON the <ORG>_MSCRM DB
In Deployment Manager on the NEW server, Import the Old Org which should overwrite the Default New Org.
If you are trying to use the same SQL or create a Tenet, it isn't going to work in the version you have.
