Question

Problem accessing file.

Asked by: ninjadragon

I cannot access my money file. I keep getting password unsucessful error message. The password is a passport password. I have tried redoing the password 3 times using Forgot password feature but this does not work. The password reset works for my MSN Messanger. Something is causing MS Money not to recognise the passport password. I also removed and reinstalled the MS Money program.
Thanks

I had the same problem with my passport login with a different peice of software.  You didn't say that you re-typed both the login ID and the password.  Try this.  I was receiving the same message and re-typed both ID and Password and it corrected the problem.

Hi bvrhodes: I tried that also and it will not let me in. Also you should be able to access the file without putting in a password but I tried that and it does not work. I also tryed resetting my password with Microsoft Passport but this also does not work.
Thanks

I don't know if this applies to Money 2004, but it does apply to Money 2005:
-------------
The reason your Money won't open is that there was a hotfix for Microsoft Money 2005 which your computer already download. This then upgrades your 'money file' to a slightly newer version.

The way around this problem is to create a temporary microsoft money file. Once you have money open, click help and check for updates. This will then download and install the updates for your Money 2005. Once you do this, you will then be able to open your original money file.
--------------

So maybe you need to do this in 2004 too! Do you have a backup of your 2004 file anyway? You may need to revert to that if your original file has become slightly corrupt.

The reason I say this, is that you said you re-installed MSMoney!

Hi za mkh: Thanks for your reply. I could not find any update feature in Money 2004. Luckily I have semmed to have solved the problem though. Some how Microsoft SQL Server 2005 seems to have been conflicting with my Microsoft Money file. By removing SQL 2005 I can now access my Money file using the password. It is very strange. I am going to forward this problem to Microsoft to see if they have any clues. The only other cause I could see is that a server which verifies the password was down. I am not sure how password verification works. Do you know anything about the process??

Sorry for the late reply. No don't know too much about how money does authentication. I know the backend of Money was once a access database (many many versions ago) so they could have migrated to SQL DB file type? Microsoft. Only they know!

I've also never used the passport option though, for the very reasons that
1) don't trust MS!
2) I always won't have internet connectivity so think that without that I would not log into my money file!

I am having similar problem to ninja dragon but am able to access my money file if I go back to a two month old version.  I am unable to open newest money file and more recent backups when I use restore.  I have the same problem if I use on line with passport or off-line.  Screen comes up wit sign in name blank.  On entering name and password get message "the sign-in name you entered is not associated with this file".  Working off-line the message is the same.  I know I am using correct name and password since I can access old file.  It seems the more recent file has somehow become corrupted, at least as regards name and password.  I am using MM 2004.  I put through a mass of updates so want to avoid rework from the older backup.
