The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Visio Viewer 2007 installation with gpo fails

Tags: Microsoft, Visio Viewer 2007, 2007, installation with gpo
The installation of visio Viewer 2007 german using a group policy fails. The program is not installed on the client.  The msi package is asigned to computers. The user has admin rights on the client PC (XP sp2).  gpresult says that the policy is applied. Just to check I created a copy of the visio viewer gpo using a different msi package (Winrar program), everything else is identical (same gpo configuration, client logon user, pc where to install, admin installation point). This time the package (winrar program) is installed without any errors. So I assume that something with the visio viewer 2007 msi package ist wrong. I do have little expirience with msi packaging and therefore I don't know how to repackage a msi file. So far I can not think of any other reasons than a corrupt msi package.
Infrastructure:
Windows 2003 domain english
XP sp2 clients german (firewall is not active)

Thanks for any help
regards

First, we need to find out if there was even an attempt to install the package.

For that, look in the application event log on the workstation with the source "application management". After the workstation is booted, is there an entry such as

The assignment of application <name>from policy <name> succeeded.

If there is, look for the following entries. Hopefully there will be an entry saying what happened, for example the installation has failed. You can find log file in machine temp folder, usually c:\windows\temp. Hopefully it will tell if there was error.

Let us know your findings. The #1 question is, whether the installation was run but failed, or if it was not run at all.

Hi Jay_Jay70

Thanks for your advice. Your link leeds me to a w2k page. I don't have a windows 2000 CD cause we have a windows 2003 environment. For me as a beginner concerning msi pagages it sounds difficult. Anyway I get your point. I have to delve into msi packaging.

Hi
There is no entry in the application event log. The same with log files (windows\temp\), no log files at all. I assume that the installation of the application is not run at all.
Over the weekend I could reproduce this behaviour at our IT Service Provider environment side. There too nothing is installed/startet at the client side.
Has anybody tried to install this package through gpo?

Then either the policy is not applied (most likely), or the package somehow is not in the policy.

You can enable logging - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249621 . Also, run gpresult or group policy wizard from GPMC.

Note that this is not a problem with this particular package, but with the policy.

...actually, since you have windows 2003, I would start with group policy results wizard in gpmc (group policy management console).

gpresult says that the policy is applied, mentioned in my first post. This link (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249621) leeds to a windows 2000 environment, We do use Windows 2003.
results wizard in gpmc says the same. GPO is applied in the computer configuration part of the gpo as well as in the user configuration part of the gpo. To my understandig the user configuration part is not needed since the user is local admin on the client maschine. I would like to change the behaviour after the policy runs OK with admin rights on the client. Why do you think it is a policy problem since I could reproduce the problem in a other environment. Additionally, the installation of winrar with the same configuration settings (exept the msi packagename) works perfect.

> This link (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249621) leeds to a windows 2000 environment, We do use Windows 2003.

it does not matter, it will work the same in win2003.

> To my understandig the user configuration part is not needed since the user is local admin on the client maschine.

no, this is wrong.

> Why do you think it is a policy problem since I could reproduce the problem in a other environment.

because there are only two possibilities: installation did not run, or installation did run but failed. The latter would result in event log entry and log file.

Hi
I could solve the problem by myself. To my understanding it has had two causes. First I had to reextract the visioviewer exe file to my admin installation point. Second I had to ajust my gpo in the computer configuration section "Software Settings\software installation". There I had to tick the opiton "ignore language when deploying this package"
Nevertheless I would like to thank to the experts which gave me useful hints.
