Change the display name in AD

by: menreeqPosted on 2008-02-25 at 15:52:06ID: 20980467

I changed the display name as that seemed like an obvious solution but when the user sends emails the puctuation/spelling is still incorrect. Is there a command line that can be run to force an update for the changes made?

by: mattee76Posted on 2008-02-25 at 15:57:19ID: 20980492

In active directory users and computers.
Right click the user object > rename
Type the correct spelling > another screen should appear
Make sure that the spelling is correct in there as well.

I tried changing this and still the punctuation/spelling is incorrect

I've had this hapen to me.
Log on as the user, delete their outlook profile and recreate it.

by: menreeqPosted on 2008-02-25 at 16:15:17ID: 20980628

I also tried changing the surname in the x.400 address.  is there a way to force AD to update?

by: mattee76Posted on 2008-02-25 at 16:15:21ID: 20980629

Just run a update on the domain recipient policy.

by: dons6718Posted on 2008-02-25 at 16:21:52ID: 20980667

This is a known behavior in outlook.  You must either delete the old outlook profile and recreate or force outlook to recheck the display name by going through the exchange account setup and retyping in the user name and click on check name.

by: menreeqPosted on 2008-02-25 at 16:25:29ID: 20980689

how do I update the recipient policy?

by: menreeqPosted on 2008-02-25 at 16:33:09ID: 20980727

looks like AD updated itself but how can I force this for future ref?
the issue is resolved

by: mattee76Posted on 2008-02-25 at 16:33:30ID: 20980729

Open exchange system manager
Recipients > Recipient update services
Right click "recipient update service (domainname)" > update now

by: mattee76Posted on 2008-02-25 at 16:34:36ID: 20980732

BTW, what "dons6718" said is correct as well, this wont change the display name in the end users outlook view.

Sounds like you might be using Outlook in cached mode.  When you make changes like this, operating Outlook against Exchange in cached mode, rebuild the Offline Address Book (OAB) in order to force the updates to propagate to the address list of your cache-mode Outlook clients.  Either disable cache mode to test, or at least let us know that you are not operating your client in cached mode.  You can also try checking the address in Outlook Web Access or forcing a manual rebuild of the OAB and then force download of the address book to your Outlook client for testing in cached mode.  If you are operating in a very large organization a rebuild of the OAB could take some time and resources...usually it's not a big deal.

Downloading and updating
Q5: How frequently is the offline address book updated on the Outlook client?

A5: If left constantly running, Outlook in cached mode automatically updates the offline address book on the client every 24 hours. The 24-hour time period is measured from the time that the offline address book was last downloaded successfully. For example, if you complete an offline address book download at 09:00 today, Outlook will start the offline address book download the next day at approximately 09:00. Therefore, different people will receive updates at different, random times.

Note The default setting on the Exchange computer is to generate an offline address book differential file every morning at 04:00. For a change that is made in Active Directory to reach the client computer, the following events must occur:
"      The change must be picked up by the Exchange computer that generates the offline address book files. This can take several hours. At worst, it can take 24 hours. This variable will be referred to as "x."
"      The Outlook clients must download the offline address book updates every 24 hours. This update can take several hours. At worst, it can take 24 hours. This variable will be referred to as "y."
The update reaches the client machines x+y hours later. It would be rare for a client to ever experience a 48-hour delay or more unless there were some Active Directory or public folder replication issues.

I would like to add that for a setup that is running Outlook 2003 and using an Exchange 2003 server Mattee76's solution was the one for me:

"Open exchange system manager
Recipients > Recipient update services
Right click "recipient update service (domainname)" > update now"

I had changed the users logon name and her last name in every possible place in AD, which changed her displayed name in Windows, her "Mailbox -" name, and obviously her email address itself.  However, outgoing email still appeared as "users oldname <usersnewname@domain.com>"  Updating the recipient service for the domain resolved the issue.

Just an addition for those who go through this thread in the future.
