I have this puzzling situation:
We initiate https file download of a fairly large file - say 20 to 40MB - from a particular download site (the site is always the same)
File transfer starts but after some random time, freezes .. i.e. no more progress
This happens at 3 sites with all computers at those sites.
The common thread is the same ISP for those 3 sites - which all end up at the same ISP switch somewhere somewhat nearby geographically.
Another common thread was the firewall make/model and configuration at each of those 3 sites - but we replaced one of them with a rather simple NATing router and it seemed the problem only got worse (progress in download seems to stop sooner).
Another common thread is the source of the files which is always the same.
One computer (a laptop) that failed "inside" the sites seems to work OK when at a remote site using a different ISP and very likely an entirely different route. This supports the source folks saying they aren't seeing this problem in general.
I need to fix this.
The folks at the source end aren't seeing this problem with other users - so they say.
This is not a very often-used capability it seems - but they have lots of users so their confidence has some credibility.
The folks in the middle (e.g. our ISP) don't feel they know how to help because the download is via *https*
We have tried this on multiple computers at each of the 3 sites and, as above, have swapped out the firewall at one site in order to determine if it's the firewalls that are causing this.
It seems this started within the last couple of months. The firewalls are new and were introduced during that time - but as above, one of them was swapped out to test the hypothesis that it's the firewalls.
What would your next steps be?
What might cause https file transfers to fail like this?
Using http and sources that are geographically in the same city for large file downloads work fine (just so the routes might be similar).
