Changing an .exe icon?

I would like to change the icon which shows on task bar for an .exe file. I don't have the source for it.
I read I need to use a resource editor. I used a couple but they are trying to open .resx or .rc files.

I am looking for a tool which opens an .exe file, enables me to replace the icon and write it back to the .exe file.
