Why are email attachments being split into multiple pieces?

A friend of mine uses AVG antivirus (free version) software (I should also say that this issue may not be related to AVG at all), on a very standard Windows XP Home SP2 system.  She uses Outlook Express v.6

Some time last week, individual e-mails with attachments (e.g. wmv's, pps's, jpg's) which she sent out began arriving at the receiver's as multiple e-mails, each with its own attachment of around 40kB (and unrecognisable to Windows).  Each email received is identical in attachment size, and they are numbered sequentially, like ATT0045, ATT0046, etc.  I received one such email - as 91 useless individual e-mails!  

Basically she is now restricted to sending text-only e-mails, until I can find a so35lution for her.
I've checked that AVG is up to date, and run a full PC virus scan with no reported issues.  The log shows a couple of Trojans found last week, but these had been placed in the AVG vault.  I subsequently deleted them from there just to be sure.  

Has anyone heard of this weird behaviour before?  If I cant locate the issue I'm going to have to do a complete reinstall, and I'd REALLY rather not.

Hello JRT55,

Yes, I have seen this. You friend may have accidently change a setting in Outlook Express to break apart message larger than a certain size. To fix the problem is OE, go to Tools > Accounts.  Select the account that you are using to send, then Properties. Under Advanced tab, uncheck the box next to "Break apart messages larger than xx KB.  Click OK. Restart OE.

JRT55--Breaking email up into pieces is a perfectly good method for send emails that are too large for the email service provider to handle.  It works fine for text messages.  Unfortunately it usually does not work for images, audio files, etc.  If the image is too large for normal sending, compress it using a .zip program.  Or use a service such as "You Send it"

and provide only the URL of the stored image in the email.

To war1 - thanx, your solution was spot on. My friend says she didn't go anywhere near the Advanced Tab within OE, or even close - and as she's a complete novice and very computer non-literate, I believe her.  Which leaves the usual Windows mystery - why did it happen in the first place? She's been using her PC for a couple of years without this issue.  Oh well...

To jcimarron - thanx for your offering as well.  I wasn't aware of this site and it's always good to gain knowledge!
