Hello hpjethwa,
By far, the most common cause of long delays in the File...Open dialog when you click the arrow to the right of the folder selection field is one or more mapped drives that are temporarily disconnected, have been moved or are no longer existent. This same issue may also cause a significant delay in opening and saving Excel files. http://support.microsoft.c
If your computer temporarily loses its network connection, then that will cause a long delay. The cure for this problem is a registry tweak: http://support.microsoft.c
Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition 7.x http://support.microsoft.c
Workbook previously saved in Excel 97 gets fully recalculated http://support.microsoft.c
You use a VAX drive. Cure is a registry tweak: http://support.microsoft.c
Regards,
Brad
BYUNDT:
Thank you so much. I looked into the external drives that I had (Maxtor and Rebit) I shut them off and WOW the file opens right away (less than a second). Now when I am not using my PC I turn those External drives "ON" s they are basically for backup. I had spent countless hours to find out why the file does not open. I can't believe the solution to be so simple.

If the file is on your local hard drive, it could be that other processes are hogging all the CPU (processor) time. To check if this is the case, open Task Manager (right-click your task bar and select Task Manager), select the Processes tab, and see which processes are taking the majority of the CPU time.
If the file is on your network, it could be that the computer or server that has the file is either experiencing a heavy network load or has other processes that are hogging the CPU.
