I don't know that you will find a "software solution".
With 6 usb printers you will need some form of hardware solution\dedicated print server.
I myself use a linux box with CUPS installed which allows for fairly good printer management.
You could run them via Windows as well if that is what you are comfortable with.

Linux would be almost to impossible to detail here given the number of flavors available (and each one slightly different)
??? You can use windows server 2003 standard, home server etc.. As long as you pay for the license I do not think MS cares where you use it. Now if you are talking about the ISP then that is another question. Plus you can run these servers on laptops or desktops, as he is only looking for software I have to assume he already has the hardware.

What kind of print server? How many clients? What kind of environment (workgroup/domain)? Do you need authentication? How many printers? What type of Printers?
