Office 2010 Virtual Drive Q

Here is what to do to remove the phantom drive:
DO NOT EDIT THE REGISTRY UNLESS YOU ARE VERY COMFORTABLE WITH SYSTEM RECOVERY PROCEDURES

First Backup up your system registry just in case you mess up and need to restore it
In XP -->http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756
In Vista --> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry
In 7 --> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

Run Regedit
Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > MountedDevices
You will see a registry key which refers to "\DosDevices\Q:" right-click on the key and select Modify.
(If your phantom drive is a different letter than "Q" then be sure to refer to use your phantom drive letter!)
A window will appear with the key's Value Data
Examine the last four columns of the Value Data
DO NOT DELETE THE KEY UNTIL YOU FIND ALL MATCHING KEYS
The matching key(s) will start with "\??\Volume{..."
Delete all the registry keys whose Value Data matches the Value Data for "\DosDevices\Q:"
(Go down the entire list and check each key's Value Data to make sure you found all matching keys.)
Once you're done, then delete the "\DosDevices\Q:" key.
Close Regedit
Reboot
The Phantom Q Drive will be gone (if you deleted all the right keys).

Before I implement this, I have 2 concerns:

1) Will I be able to "re-use" the drive letter Q: as a mapped drive?

2) Will removing the virtual drive negatively impact the operations or future updates of Office 2010?

1) yes, you will be able to reuse...

2) It depends on which version of office 2010 you are using.  If using one of the "small" download trials, yes, but most (full media installs) are unaffected...

3) No harm to try (especially if you backup registry first)... You can always restore registry and/or reinstall Office if problems persist!

Unfortunately, all I can find is the "small" download.

Any idea where I can find a full media install?    If I use my Office 2010 Professional media (from Microsoft partner program) with the Home and Small Business Product Key purchased by my customer, should this work.  Does 2010 allow you to mix media and product keys?

Finding and installing from the full downloaded version did not require the Virtual Q drive and thus allowed us to keep it as a mapped drive.
