Excel files open extremely slow over network

One PC on the entire 75 node LAN has this problem.

Opening a 100K spreadsheet takes 8-12 seconds.
-I can copy that same file w Explorer and it copies in less than a second
-I can open that file from any PC on the LAN and it opens in less than a second
-I can open that file from the PC itself (after copying to desktop) and it opens in less than a second
-I have repaired Office and "re-installed" from the Add/Remove Programs app in Control Panel
-I have run diags on the NIC (no errors) and REPLACED the NIC

This problems persists even though I have done all this. ANY IDEAS?

thanks.

Is the "bad" PC also slow opening other spreadsheets on the LAN, or just that one particular spreadsheet?

Check the System Event Log on the bad PC to see if there are any exceptions being logged.

Are you opening the file from within excel or directly from the network locations?
If you opening the file directly try the other or vice versa. Then compare results.

Also if you could connect another computer that connection to compare apples to apples.

Disconnect the other network drives and try ?

sjklein42: ALL spreadsheets are slow. I used the 100K file as an example. Larger spreadsheets take FOREVER.

yo_bee: from Excel or Explorer = SAME RESULT

shanky_j: I suppose I could try that, but not sure what it would prove.. I'll do so and get back to you though. thx
Try activating the "Lookup Wizard" for that PC's Excel.  See instructions on this web page:

Do you have office validation installed?
If so try removing this and see if it works

How long has this been happening to this one computer?
Do Word, pdf, txt files or any other file with any other program also open slow?

Or is it only Excel?
Maybe an excel add-in is active which causes the delay.
Try to disable some add-ins via Tools -> Add-ins to see if it's getting better.
To add to the previous post.
Run excel w/ a safemode switch.
Excel.exe /safemode Or excel.exe /s
This will run excel without any addins

shanky_j: disconnected the one other network drive and tried: NO CHANGE
Darude1234: No ADD-INS were on Office

Also I have repaired the Office install AND re-installed from Add/Remove Programs. NOW I plan to physically UN-INSTALL and then re-install. This is CAH-RAZZZZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

never seen anything this weird....
Have you tried running in excel in safemode?

I finally found the problem as described here i.

Microsoft issued a “patch” in a recent Windows update that was causing all excel files loaded off a network share to be “validated.”  It looks like it was not tested very thoroughly by Microsoft, and has a lot of angry users (Add me to that list.)  This would have become an issue with everyone here if they ran the windows update that included this patch.

UNINSTALLING the patch fixes the problem
What about a local Excel file.
Still the same results?
