Question

Configuring storage under Hyper-V Server Core

Asked by: naughtynat

Hi

Just started playing with the stand alone Hyper-V R2 Core.

Got it up and running, installation was a breeze, but issue is how do I configure storage so I can setup other parititions/virtual HDD so I can actually run something on top of the Hyper-V!

I know this can be done from the command line - but I havent been able to find a guide.

Or is it best to just setup the Remote Management and configure it all thru that?

I am looking at running an SBS08 box and Serv08 box on this, and would like to run the remote management from the Serv08 box, but I cant get storage to install that to manage it. So was thinking just starting the management with a Vista Workstation if that is much easier than just getting something up and running via command line.

Install Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager on another machine.

Add this HYPER Core as a HOST.

Then configuring is a breeze.

.. unless you want to use powershell scripts.

If you do not have another machine, or Systems Center Virtual Machine, then the best way to configure the storage is via Remote Management just like you said.  You're also right in the fact that you can configure it via the command prompt but I always find a graphical interface to be easier to work with.  It's really up to you and your own personal preference.

Ady

I was hoping that there was a few easy scripts to run to get everything working 100% - but maybe I am dreaming to think that a CLI can be easy to use :-D.

Does anyone have guide or link to details of just getting the initial system setup? Currently dont have a serv08 or vista box that I can use - as everything still xp - but if no easy alternative will just setup one.

You can't really setup new virtual machines from the Hyper-V Server's command line, you will need Hyper-V management console (on Vista or 2008 Server) or RSAT (Windows 7) to do that.

However, you can setup your partitions on the Hyper-V server's command prompt easily using DISKPART, which is simular to old fdisk but a lot more powerful.

Check MS link for DISKPART commands, look for create partition: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415

Hi naughtynat,

In terms of configuring Hyper-V Server there isn't a huge amount of guidance released from Microsoft.  Everything that they have released is at http://www.microsoft.com/hyper-v-server/en/us/technical-resources.aspx

In terms of configuring your newly installed server; the best way to configure the disks is remotely as I described above.  In terms of setting up Virtual Machines you cannot do that from within the Hyper-V Server itself.  You can ONLY do this remotely either using Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager or by using a remote console from a Vista/Server 2008 machine.  The configuration guides in the link above will explain all of that and help you along.

Ady

In terms of scripts to get your Hyper-V Server configured properly there is a very good tool called HyperVRemote which was written by one of the Hyper-V Development Team Managers.  You can find it at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote.  It comes with full instructions.  Without this script you won't be able to remotely connect to your server in order to configure drives/install VMs.

Ady
