Question

How to share a USB port

Asked by: Treasur2

I'm running xp pro on both the host and vm.  I see I can't make the vm see the USB port on hte host via other postings here and elsewhere. But no one actually descirbes how one creates a share of the usb.  I don't see it listed in the settings of the VM.

IT shows up just fine in the host, not red or yellow in device manager.  The actual device I'm trying to utilize is a built in smart card reader on my HP compaq 6910p.  Yes, I've been to their webiste, no there is not further documentation about this issue.  Yes I have the latest drivers.

You can't share the USB port.   What you CAN do if you have a storage device connected to the USB port (e.g. an external hard drive) is set that device as a shared device on your network; and then use it via the network connection of the virtual PC.    Do it all the time & it works like a charm.

garycase is right,

there is no support of sharing usb ports at the moment.

When something is connected to the usb port you can use this as if it is connected to the maschine (access the drive, share a printer). If Virtual Maschine Addons are installed you can share the folders on this drive wihtout using a network share...

Good luck

It is not a storage device. It is a smartcard device.  I'm using the the VM to login to a customers network on occassion, thus I need access to my smart-card reader.

Does it have to be a storage device?

It has to be a shareable device, so you can create a network share.

Your smartcard reader should show up (on the "real" computer) as a few removeable drives [plug it in and look in My Computer (or Computer if the host is Vista).   You can right-click on each of those removeable drives and share them ... then they'll be useable from your "other" PC (the virtual one) via the network.   Works just fine ... I just plugged in a smartcard reader and confirmed it from one of my virtual PC's :-)
