Question

Creating a VHD of a Physical Disk (desktop)

Asked by: choldsworth

Hey there. I'm currently having a bit of trouble creating a virtual image of a laptop. One of our developers has an environment set up on a laptop that he would like to have access to in the form of a virtual image. The only caveat here is that he wants to keep the whole configuration (both software and settings) of the laptop so that if he ever needs to use it he doesn't need to waste time configuring the environment. I know how to create a standard image but I have no idea how to create an image of an existing disk (non-server).

I tried using Virtual PC's 'Virtual Disk Wizard' to create a virtual hard disk and selected the 'Linked to a hard disk (advanced)' option and selected the local disk however when it creates the VHD file the size is only 64kb and mounting it in VPC 2007 does nothing.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Hi

the option that you have used is a linked VHD which points to the hard disk and it only records the changes made in the new virtual machine. i.e if you install any applications in the VM then that changes are saved on to the VHD which increases the size of the VHD.
