Question

Hyper V - deleting snapshots fail disk space

Asked by: nostrasystems

Hi

I have an urgent problem, i have a hyper v server that was running out of diskspace so i deleted unused snaphots and i say on the web that you need to shutdown the vm to recover the disk space so shut both vm's down and merge in progress started but ate my last 1gb of diskspace so i presume this is a temp storage that is need while the merge in proigress is taking place? now i have no disk space left on the data drive how do i redirect the merge in progress to use an alternative location for temp disk space

Thanks

how many VMs do you have on the Hyper-V server? how about to do it one by one? that is:

1. shut down all VMs
2. move (copy+delete) all VM folders to another HD except the one to be shrunk
3. delete the snapshots of the specific VM
4. move the VM to another HD
5. copy the next VM back from another HD
6. repeat step 3-6 until all VMs are shrunk

hope it helps,
bbao

i sorted it by adding another disk then moving the snapshots folder to the other volume then edited the xml virtual machine file to point at the new snapshot location shut down the vm and then let a merge take place then the snapshot folder shrunk then moved files back and reedited the xml file and put everything back as was now its cool
