Question

SCVMM P2V migration Warning 13246

Asked by: ABS3

Windows Server 2008 Standard - running Hyper V and SCVMM 2008
target server: Windows 2000 Server SP4, setup as lone DC on test network
Everything fully patched and working correctly.

In the P2V conversion process, during the Prerequisite Check on the target system, I recieved a warning that the IDE Controller driver was missing.

It looked like this:

Warning(13246)
No compatible drivers were identified......

Device Type: IDE Controller
Device Description: Primary IDE Channel
Device mfg: (Std IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers)
....

Recommended Action: "stick the right driver in the Driver Import folder".

I ignored the warning and continued with the migration. I found that after the migration process I was able to open Device Manager and run driver updates on all hardware devices that had driver issues and the VM was able to find drivers in the usual system location. I was just wondering if this is a common occurance in the P2V migration of servers into Hyper V or is there some other preperation that should be done to have a seemless transfer into the virtual enviroment. This was the migration of 2000 Server into Hyper V as a virtual 2000 box.

Any advice?

That is not the usual case in p2v. Normally you should not see any warnings about drivers and devices. But since it is a best effort check, sometimes you may recieve wrong warnings.

P2V of a Win 2000 DC is a supported scenario.
The only thing to be careful about is not turning on both the physical DC and Vm DC at the same time.
