Question

Strange P2V issue

Asked by: snogopher

I am attempting to do a P2V using VMM 2008, which I have done to quite a few other servers and I am getting an error that I am having trouble finding out any info on.
The target server is running Server 2003 SP2, it was a DC but I demoted it before i tried to virtualize it. It is also a very large server data wise and takes over 8 hours to P2V before i get the following error:
Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the Hyper-V operation on the 'hyperv' server because of the error: 'target server' failed to add device 'Microsoft Synthetic Disk Drive'. (Virtual machine ID 2616ED06-5E2D-40C5-B092-C534E9EBF53E)

Cannot change media of type 'VHD' while virtual machine 'target server' is online. (Virtual machine 2616ED06-5E2D-40C5-B092-C534E9EBF53E)
 (Unknown error (0x8000))

The error happens towards the end of the process, after the data has been transfered to the VHDs.
Anyone have any ideas? I would like to try to limit how many times i have to try to run this overnight job, I have tried twice now and have gotten this error both times.

What kind of disk you are attaching as a vhd ? have you tried IDE as a disk (vhd)?

Don't quite understand, The target server is a scsi array. I am using the VMM P2V wizard to do the conversion and do not remember any options for disk type.
If you couldn't already tell I am not exactly a VMM expert, I just know the basics.

Previous conversions you have done were they targeted on a SCSI ARRAY as this one ?

Also, what were the configurations for them, were they DC or just member/workgroup servers ?

This may be a permission causing this as well - I will look into it and will get back on this as and when I have an update

Well I just ran it for the 4th time last night and it worked... I had received the same error listed in my first post the first 3 times. I made no changes so I am not sure why it all of the sudden worked but I now have the machine virtualized.
This was the first DC I have done but I knew that virtualizing a DC is not recommended so I demoted it before I started the virtualization process.

I just thought off asking you if you could remember any change you made either on the demoted dc itself or in vmm 2008 before the conversion ? just trying to understand this issue :-)

Kind Regards

Cant think of anything I did different, each time I tried to P2V i would reboot the target machine and shut down IIS before starting P2V process. I shut down IIS because I have had it cause problems in other P2Vs I have done.

by: plimpiasPosted on 2009-07-26 at 11:09:28ID: 24946779

P2V conversions are best performed offline. If online is used you should  hut down all database services, DNS, DHCP, IIS, DC, Exchange, WIN. Etc. to avoid problems
