The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Virtual disk sizing

Tags: Microsoft, Virtual PC, 2007
Hi,
I converted my laptops HD to virutal disk succesfully. (Actually it hangs when I try to start it in the same laptop; this would be another question if someone can tell why)
I don't need to make virtual disk of the entire HD, because there is 55 of 80GB free and I would not need the whole capasity on virtual pc/HD. Laptop has XP installed and I want to leave it runnig through virtual PC and install Vista as the main operating system. I don't want to have multiboot system.

So, is there a way I can convert exsiting HD to be smaller virtual HD?
If not, what would be the best solution to do it?

How to shrink a VHD file:

This can be done, but its a little bit of a process. I would make a copy of the current VHD file that you have and make sure that you closed it out (DONT SAVE STATE)

The reason why your VHD file is so large is because your windows partition was 80GB.
So, we first need to fix that problem first by shrinking the partition.

-----------------------------------------------------
Resize Partition

1. Download GParted from the following site:
      http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828
(this was tested on the 0.3.4-11 version)
(You could also use something like Partition Magic - but I went the free route)

2. See the following on how to resize the partition when GParted comes up.
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm (general instructions - Virtual PC 2007 instructions below)

3. To get Gparted to come up in Virtual PC I had to boot with the "Force VESA driver"

4. Also, while in there, I was unable to move the mouse so I had to [TAB] through the menus. So, TAB through to select the hard drive, then press enter, TAB to the size, manually enter the size you want - apply change. Then tab up to the top menu and select apply

5. I had a little trouble getting the exit button to work (somebody who knows linux could probably figure this out) but - I just unmounted the cd and closed the VM.

That takes care of the partition size in Windows. Now, we need to shrink your vhd file
-----------------------------------------------------
Shrink your vhd file

1. Download the VHD Resizer from the following site: http://vmtoolkit.com/files/folders/converters/entry87.aspx

2. Install this and then run it. Select the VHD file that you want to resize.

3. Select the destination file.

4. You will see a min/max size in GB down at the bottom - make sure that you select MB. (I had to set my value to 1MB over the Min to get it to work)

5. Then wait... it will take a while to convert. Close out VHD Resizer

6. On VM Restart, Check disk came up when I rebooted but, didnt find any issues.

7. It will also prompt you that a new HD was found in Windows - and that a reboot is needed. Reboot and you are done!
-----------------------------------------------------

Let me know how it goes.

As far as the not being able to run a VM of the same system on itself, I am sure there is some type of driver / SID / registry conflict.

There might also be an issue of running Virtual PC/Server inside Virtual PC/Server.

between steps 5 and 6 on "shrink your vhd file" - remember that you set the new VHD to a new file name so you will have to change your settings in VPC / VS to point to the new VHD.

I forgot and left out that step....

Thanks!
I will try this today evening and let you know how it worked out..
The other thing of the VM hanging, it hangs the same way in other system too. That I can understand as it is different hardware, but not in any bluescreen or something like that. If I try to boot in Safe mode, it hangs loading "mup.sys". I have found out that it may not be the "mup.sys" even it is the last thing seen on the screen before hanging the system.

So does anyone know can I run VM of the same PC in the VPC in the same PC?
