Dynamic text box based on combo selection

Hi all,
I have a report that opens in preview mode when my search form opens.  Now I need to have the text box display what was selected in the City combo box.  The form uses an ApplyFilter button to filter the report.  The CityName at the top changes if say a user filters all properties in Houston.  But......I also have a ---Select All---- with a *  so the City combo has two columns for when a user wants to select all cities.  My issue is the report displays some random City.  If the user selects the ---Select All--- I need the City text box on the report to display All Cities or nothing at all.  Hope this is making sense.

Having an "All" option complicates things a bit because the box will typically contain numbers, and all of your code will be written for this numeric value.

I am not fully understanding why you are not presenting the user with the form "before" the report opens though...

How good are you with VBA coding and SQL?

This seems to be sort of what I am looking for but instead of ther RecCount field I need the City selected from my cboCity combo.

You have -  =IIf([Forms]![frmRecords]![txtRecCount]="<All>","<All>",GetRecCount())
Mine would be - =IIf([Forms]![frmPropertiesbyCity]![cboCity]="*","*",GetCity())

I would figure except I just get Name?  as my selected value.

Don't use: "*" as a selection.
1. A great many new users have no idea what it means
2. As a string, it too must be enclosed in some odd combination of quotes for it to be interpreted correctly.
3. Are you sure you spelled everything properly?
4. Is GetCity() returning the correct value after the button is clicked?

This is why I use "<All>"
So try "<All>" instead of "*" and see what happens

What does GetCity() do?

Does it go to the form and perform the IIF statement and return a name?

If it does, then logically speaking, you could simply assign the control the function value.

In the On_Open event

me.CityTextBoxOnReport = GetCity()

My combo has two identical columns except for the first entry.  Column 1 has the * and column has the
--All Cities--  It is unbound and I needed to add a select all but not in the Cities table.  The SQL behind the form is

But this isn't flawless because I cannot seem to display the --All Cities-- as a lable

Again, my experience with this is that the "*" needs to be enclosed in some combination of quotes in order for it to be used as a criteria, that is why I don't use it.

For example the syntax may need to be something like this:
    If Me.cboCity.Value = ""*"" Then
...Or
   
     If Me.cboCity.Value = "'" & "*" & "'" Then
...Or
   
     If Me.cboCity.Value Like "*" Then

...Or any number of other possible combinations.


In any event, I still don't see why you need this.
Why not just reference the <All Cities> value from the same combobox?

Just use the column Index number form this column, something like this:

If Me.cboCity.Column(1).Value = "<All Cities>" Then
    strCity = "Like '*'"
Else
    strCity = "='" & Me.cboCity.Value & "'"
End If

(Here I have dropped your non-satndard "--xxx--" and replaced it with the more popular "<xxx>")

Note that the Combobox Column Index Number is Zero Based, so the First Column is Column(0)
