The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ASP.NET 2.0 Gridview UPDATE command. Must declare the scalar variable "@ItemKey".
Tags: gridview, update, declare, scalar, variable
Ok, I'm trying to use the UPDATE command with the embedded gridview. Upon using the UPDATE command, I need to specify which column is being worked on. The prime candidate for this is a unique identifier field I have called ItemKey. So, here's my statement: UPDATE Items SET ProductName = @ProductName, Category = @Category, Price = @Price, SandH = @SandH, Tax = @Tax WHERE (ItemKey = @ItemKey).
Everything works fine except for when it tries to use the identifying row. "(ItemKey = @ItemKey)". I get the error message "Must declare the scalar variable "@ItemKey"." All the other paramaters seem to magically appear so I can use them, why is @ItemKey not appearing? Thanks, Chris.

Check the code behind in your .aspx page and make sure that the @ItemKey parameter has been defined.  You may not have specified the @ItemKey parameter when using the wizard for your datagrid view.  Also make sure that you have the correct case on your parameter in your code behind.

A copy of the code behind of the page may help in solving this problem also.

Also, make sure the ItemKey field name is in both the gridview's datasource's select statement (SelectCommand), and the GridView's DataKeyNames property.

ItemKey is selected in the select statement. With all the other paramaters, it seems the gridview automatically creates them. For example, I never manually coded "@ProductName". So it seems @ItemKey should work the same. If I was to specifically declare the @ItemKey parameter, how would I do it??? Just declare the @ItemKey paramater??? That doesn't really make sense because I would have to set it to some value and since the gridview is created dynamically I would never know which control to set it to.

Could you paste a copy of your code behind for the update statement or the gridview?

01.21.2008 at 06:44PM PST, ID: 20711557
Select Statement:
SELECT * FROM [Items] WHERE ([UserName] = @UserName)
Update Statement:
UPDATE Items SET ProductName = @ProductName, Category = @Category, Price = @Price, SandH = @SandH, Tax = @Tax WHERE (ItemKey = @ItemKey)
Gridview Code:
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True" AutoGenerateDeleteButton="True" AutoGenerateEditButton="True">
                <Columns>
                    <asp:BoundField DataField="ProductName" HeaderText="ProductName" SortExpression="ProductName" />
                    <asp:BoundField DataField="Category" HeaderText="Category" SortExpression="Category" />
                    <asp:BoundField DataField="Price" HeaderText="Price" SortExpression="Price" />
                    <asp:BoundField DataField="SandH" HeaderText="SandH" SortExpression="SandH" />
                    <asp:BoundField DataField="Tax" HeaderText="Tax" SortExpression="Tax" />
                    <asp:ImageField DataAlternateTextField="ProductName" DataImageUrlField="ItemLogo"
                        NullImageUrl="~/images/spacer.gif" ReadOnly="True">
                    </asp:ImageField>
                </Columns>
            </asp:GridView>

I believe that with parameters in the asp:gridView are only defined by the control when they are connected to a bound field.  Try re-defining your ItemKey parameter.  If you look in your code behind their should be a section that defines all of the parameters for each sql statement.  Do a ctrl+f for updateparamters or something of the sort.  Check there to make sure that ItemKey is defined there.  If not you can define it yourself like this:

<UpdateParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="ItemKey" Type="Whatever type Itemkey is" />
</UpdateParameters>
