error validation not working for vb.net form text box

In my windows vb.net form I have a text box bound to a DB field. When I add a new record and try to save it with no data (null) in the textbox/field, I want to handle the error, how do I do this. I added an ErrorProvider to the form, set its Datasource to the forms bindingsource, set the textboxes Error on ErrorProvider property to a string value, and added the code below to the validating event of the textbox, but this event is not even firing when debugging - what else could I possibly have to still do?

If Not IsNumeric(Entry_numberTextBox1.Text) Then
ErrorProvider1.SetError(Entry_numberTextBox1, "Not a numeric value.")
Else
' Clear the error.
ErrorProvider1.SetError(Entry_numberTextBox1, "")
End If
