Need help compiling software to run on Windows XP

I have a program that was originally written for Unix. According to the developer I should be able to compile it and make an executable to run on Windows NT using Visual C++ and the nmake utility. I do however use Windows XP and don't have any experience in compiling in C++ and am struggeling with this task. I have the source code, but need some assistance in compiling it to run on a Windows machine. Does anyone know how to do it or can you suggest any companies that might take on such a task?
