The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I need to send a filename through a textBox, to an  ifstream object, replacing the line:
// ifstream input_data("score_data.txt");

 ifstream input_data(textBox1->Text->ToCharArray(0,10));

I was trying the above. Apprently it did produce the right type for const char *  argument. Please help.

Why do you need the 0,10 there? This way you will only take the first 10 characters of your textbox1->Text
If you want the entire textbox input it should simply be:
ifstream input_data(textBox1->Text->ToCharArray());

The problem actually was a type mispatch. Please help see the compiling message below:

First_Form.cpp
c:\documents and settings\zzhang\my documents\visual studio 2005\projects\first_form\first_form\Form1.h(152) : error C2664: 'std::basic_ifstream<_Elem,_Traits>::basic_ifstream(const char *,std::ios_base::openmode,int)' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'cli::array<Type,dimension> ^' to 'const char *'
       ...
How to I get a const char *   from a textBox->Text which apprently is a object that has many converting mathods?

Thanks

Ze

Since this is managed C++, I'll move you to the appropriate zone.

It seems that your function expects a const char * parameter and doesn't like it when you pass a char *. Try this:

char textboxcontents[] = textBox1->Text->ToCharArray();
const char *txtconconverted = textboxcontents;
ifstream input_data(txtconconverted);

Thanks, but no luck. Looks like To CharArray returns wchat_t, not  simply a C-char array. Are we close?  Thanks.

c:\documents and settings\zzhang\my documents\visual studio 2005\projects\first_form\first_form\Form1.h(152) : error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'cli::array<Type,dimension> ^' to 'char []'

        [
            Type=wchar_t,
            dimension=1
        ]

Hi again,

Sorry I forgot that the textbox is unicode. Basically you want to convert the unicode to an ASCII encoding it seems. To be honest I'm not sure if there is an easy way to do this. There used to be a function wcstombs in stdlib but it has been depracated and don't know if it still works or if you want to use it.

I would suggest trying to use the System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes method on your textBox1->Text which would result in a byte array and then copy those bytes one by one on your char array.

But maybe there is an easier way to do this. Maybe another expert has a better solution.
