Well, it is very difficult to learn how to program from a book. I would seriously recommend you take a class from a community college. They probably won't teach you .NET specifically, but once you understand how to program in the first place, you will find the transition to .NET easy.

First, I would make a decision as to what language you would like to learn. .NET isn't really a language. It's a set of libraries that get used by the language of your choice. VB.NET is easiest for beginners to learn, while C# is more robust and powerful. If you want to learn C# but there is no specific class for it, try taking a C++ class, since C++ is the base language from which C# and Java were modeled after. Really, IMO, Java and C# are just attempts to "dumb down" the thornier aspects of C++. But I am a C++ programmer, so I may be biased ;-)
