The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

how to insert a record into ms sql database in c# using visual studio 2005

Tags: insert, sql, database, using, record
Hi,

I am trying to find out how to execute the following sql statment to my ms sql database in c# winforms using visual studio 2005: -

INSERT INTO Users Values (NewID(), 'Eljay', 'c:\pics\pic1.jpg', 'c:\pics\pic2.jpg')

I have the following code that queries the database that shows the connection string I am using: -
  //Create new virtual dataset
            DataSet yds = new DataSet();

            //Create connection to mdf sql file
            System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection con =
                new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(
                @"Data Source=.\sqlexpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\MainDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True");

            //Create new data adapter and perform query
            System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter da = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter(
                "Select * from users order by Username", con.ConnectionString);

            // place result into virtual dataset yds
            da.Fill(yds);

            //Bind virtual dataset yds to combobox and display username but value is the userID index
            cmbUsers.DisplayMember = "Username";
            cmbUsers.ValueMember = "UserID";
            cmbUsers.DataSource = yds.Tables[0];

Many thanks

You don't need to use a dataset, just a sql command and parameters:

      SqlCommand cmd  = new SqlCommand(
            "INSERT INTO Users (Name, [...]) Values (@paramName, [....] )", conn);

      cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;

      cmd.Parameters.Add(
            new SqlParameter("@paramName", name)); (etc..)

 cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

Isn't the parameters for stored procedures or am I missing something. Sorry I'm new to c# as I have been dealing with vb.

I have tried the following: -

            System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection con =
                new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(
                @"Data Source=.\sqlexpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\MainDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True");

            con.Open();
            SqlCommand cmd  = new SqlCommand(
            "INSERT INTO Users Values (newID(), 'Test', 'test', 'tesT')", con);

            cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;

            cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
            con.Close();

but it does not seem to insert any records.

Best Regards
Lee

does the line:

INSERT INTO Users Values (newID(), 'Test', 'test', 'tesT')"

work in query analyzer? (try it) Don't you need to specify the column names? i.e:

INSERT INTO Users (Id, name, age ... Values newID(), 'Test', 'test', 'tesT')", conn);

You can use parameters for text commands. Just put @<pamName> in the sql and then create a parameter with the same name and add ot to the parameters collection of the command.

Hi,

Yes it works in the query analizer as this is how i have done it in vb.net but would like to know how I can do it in C#.

Best Regards

Try using
...(" + Guid.NewGid().ToString() ", ...

instead of the NewID(). Are you getting any errors on the cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() ?

Still no joy i'm afraid.

I've found an example that shows the following code that I have changed to suit my connection string etc: -

            SqlConnection mySqlConnection = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=.\sqlexpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\MainDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True");

            SqlCommand mySqlCommand = mySqlConnection.CreateCommand();
            mySqlCommand.CommandText = "insert into users values(newID(), 'eljay', 'test', 'test1')";

            mySqlConnection.Open();

            mySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();

            mySqlConnection.Close();

It runs the code but doesn't come up with any error messages. Is there a way to see how many rows were affected.

Best regards
Lee

Yes, instead of ExecuteNoNQuery use ExecutScalar i.e:

int affected = (int)cmd.ExecuteScalar();

This sample from MSDN should help:

static public int AddProductCategory(string newName, string connString)
{
    Int32 newProdID = 0;
    string sql =
        "INSERT INTO Production.ProductCategory (Name) VALUES (@Name); "
        + "SELECT CAST(scope_identity() AS int)";
    using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connString))
    {
        SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql, conn);
        cmd.Parameters.Add("@Name", SqlDbType.VarChar);
        cmd.Parameters["@name"].Value = newName;
        try
        {
            conn.Open();
            newProdID = (Int32)cmd.ExecuteScalar();
        }
        catch (Exception ex)
        {
            Console.WriteLine(ex.Message);
        }
    }
    return (int)newProdID;
}
