The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

C# How do I get serial port data on different forms in the same project?

Tags: C#
Hi, I am reading data from serial port (GPS) in a windows application.  I have a main form and other child forms. When I am using only one form I can read data from GPS easily. But when using more than one form  I am confusing.

In Form1, I can read, parse and use the some of the GPS NMEA sentences . I use serialPort1_DataReceived event for reading the data in Form1.

In Form2 and Form3, I want to get other NMEA sentences which come from the same serial port.

How can I access the same serial port data from Form2 and Form3. Or how can I send the incoming data from Form1 to other forms? What is the best way to get the same serial port data in different forms?

You don't need any form to use serial port.
You can create a class used from any form.

Do You plan to use it simultaneously from different forms?

I plan to use it simultaneously from different forms. For example, I plan to show latitude and longitude values in Form1. These values come from serialport1. There is no problem in Form1. Everything works fine.

And also I plan to show satellite elevation and azimuth values in Form2. These values also come from serialport1. And in Form3 I will show different values from serialport1.

How can I get the serialport1 data in Form2 and Form3? When I try to use serialport1 in Form2 and Form3 I get the "Access to COM port is denied" mesaage. Because the COM port was openned in Form1 and Form1 is getting the data at the same time.

Are You sending something to serial port or only reading?
If only reading It'll be simple.
You should have only one thread to continuosly read and decode.
This thread shoul be started at any moment.
At main program's for load for example.
And now in Your forms Form1,Form2,Form3 You should only read decoded data not touching serial port.

I am sending a command line to serial port in Form1 for reading the latitude and longitude values. And then I can read the data continuosly in Form1.
Example data for the response of the serial port in Form1;
POS,0,06,214619.50,3722.385158,N,12159.833768,W,00043.110,331.0,1.2

In Form2 I will send another command line to serial port for reading the data about the satellites used. And the response of the serial port for second command:
SAT,04,02,103.56,50.5,U,2,225,61,52.4,U

And in Form3 I will send the third command line to serial port. The response for the third command:
UTM,015454.00,10S,588757.623,4136720.056,2,04,03

Actually I want show the different responses on different forms. I can read and decode the data using serialPort1_DataReceived event in Form1. But I dont know which event can read the data in Form2 and Form3. And how can I send the commands to serial port in Form2 and Form3? For example I will send the satellite command in every second to serial port in Form2. And I will show the response in Form2. And the same for Form3.

Once again.
You should have one central place for dealing with Serial port.
External to all Your forms.
Each form requesting a data from serial port should place it's request in some kind of queue.
The requests from the queue should be processed sequentially.
After the serial port receive data for a given request it should fire appropriate event.
