The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I need a set of characters to permit for a password field

I am making a password text field but first need to get a set of valid characters for a password.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable set of characters to support?  Or should I support any character they type in?

I do intend to encrypt it before storing in the database using AES encryption.

thanks,

I would go 7 digits atleast if this question is for security..
I would make the first digit a number
the 5 digit the # symbol
and the last digits a combo of numbers
adn force characters in between the first number and the # sign.

This is top secret clearence format ...on several air force bases.

Air Force is now 12 digit with at least 2 numbers, 2 special characters, 2 lower-case and 2 upper-case letters.

I would allow all letters, numbers and the main special characters: !@#$%^&*()_+=-[],.></?;'":}{

I think you shoudn't limit the user creativity: Using special characters, combining upper and lower case, mixing with numbers, etc.
What you have to worry about is the minimum password length, to achieve enough password entropy. I would suggest 8 characters mininum.

I agree that 8 is good.

It's a password for managers of a very small business where they clock in to the system at shift change and thereby take over from another manager.  But there's no money on the system.  It's only about tracking which manager had better statistics than others.  There's no inventories or anything with cash value.

I will encrypt the password, so it will be virtually impossible for anyone to get it out of the database.  And it's just my Windows program using the database, so it's not like the password will be visible to anyone by my program.

So I want an easy set of rules that will allow them to convienently use almost whatever they want.

I was thinking 4 digits at a minumum, so they can use a familiar PIN, for example.  A Max of 10 perhaps?

I mostly don't want them to forget the password.  Maybe I could even block special characters so they won't forget it??

thanks,
newbieweb

in that situation I think a PIN would be sufficient - you could even limit it to numbers only for simplicity.

pins with pure digits are usually restricted 4-6 digits in length, because it is harder to remember than alphanumeric passwords.

05.08.2008 at 07:23PM PDT, ID: 21530051
The AirForce in General is not 12 digits...I work in that arena...

05.08.2008 at 07:25PM PDT, ID: 21530057
What if I wanted to take 4 or more characters, and let them decide.  Maybe they want to use a word or a name for example.

What length max should I allow?  Should I block special characters?

05.08.2008 at 07:29PM PDT, ID: 21530072

Rank: Master

Special characters are more up to you, it increases security to require them, but also generally makes them harder to remember.  Block them only if you want to increase ease of use for your users.

05.08.2008 at 07:33PM PDT, ID: 21530092
Is this a security question or an ease of use question.

Strong passwords...are generally 8 digits...one symbol, one uppercase, lowercase..maybe a user name to make it somewhat easier to remember...

If you dont want a strong password..then go lower than that...but atleast make it the minium server 2003 password compliant.

Hackers are smart these days.

If you dont care about security..then make it whatever...

example...for a user named John Hancock

jHancock#349
very unhackable...and not so hard to forget

and then make them change there password every so often...

they just change the numbers around and all is good

05.08.2008 at 07:35PM PDT, ID: 21530098
so formula would be
first letter of first name...lower case
scn letter of last name ...upper case
rest of lst name
symbol
3 numbers

05.09.2008 at 05:35PM PDT, ID: 21537345
what's an easy way to scan the string for special characters?  Can I scan the string for a set of characters?

05.09.2008 at 05:39PM PDT, ID: 21537351

Rank: Wizard

one easy way is to check for the ascii values of each character, something like:

foreach (char c in password)
{
    if ((int)c > 127)
    {
           // it is a special character
    }
}

There are some special characters under 127, like !@#$%*^, also you can check for numeric and alphabetic characters independently
Assisted Solution

05.09.2008 at 06:16PM PDT, ID: 21537471
any more special characters under 127?

05.09.2008 at 06:16PM PDT, ID: 21537472
I guess I should find an ASCII table...
