The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to use custom made classes in the VB IDE?
Tags: Microsoft, Visual Studio, 2005, Visual Basic
Hello all,

I am in the process of writing a few custom classes for an application I am working on.  Currently I am using the VS IDE.  I create a new class by right clicking my solution explorer, and selecting new class.  I am putting my code there, and saving it.  When I return to the design view (the drag n' drop design part) my class doesn't appaer in my toolbox.  Any ideas why?   Thanks all.

Cheers,

Rob

The ToolBox is the place for controls. If you add controls to your project, they will appear automatically. You can also right-click in the ToolBox to add controls; they will be referenced automatically.

If your class is basically properties & methods, instantiate it in code:
Dim myClassObject as New myClass

those classes are controls? or data classes?
The toolbox just show UI controls.

So are you making user controls or classes ?

Classes aren't added via the toolbox, they are added via references and import statements.

Controls are however added via the toolbox, you may need to right click on the toolbox and select "Choose Items" from the context menu, then browse for the assembly containing your user control.

Hey all,

I don't quite know the difference between controls and classes and data classes, but I suspect I am making controls.  Currently I am having troubles with a custom dataGridView.  It is declared in its own class file, but it doesn't appear in my toolbox.

Try to reset the toolbox, press right-button at an empty space in the toolbox, and choose the "Reset" option.

In this case you need to add it to the toolbox, by right clicking on the toolbox and selecting 'choose items' then finding the assembly with the controls you want. Then you should be able to add them via the toolbox.

Hey again,

If anyone could post some stub code I would appreciate it.  For example, say I wanted to make an object which was inherited from a dataGridView which overrode the event handler LostFocus to print a message to the console that said "w00t" or whatever, how would it be written, and where would it go?  If it is done properly, and in the right spot, will it appear in the toolbox automatically?

Thanks

Ok first you need to create a new usercontrol. Then go into the usercontrol.designer.vb class (the autogenerated class - if you can't find it then make sure you 'show all files' selected in the solution explorer).
Change the line Inherits System.Windows.Forms.UserControl to System.Windows.Forms.DataGridView, this makes you new user control inherit from the datagridview.

Then in the main usercontrol.vb class file add a method
Private Sub UserControl_LostFocus(ByVal sender as object, ByVal e as System.EventArgs) Handles Me.LostFocus
  Console.Write "Woot"
End Sub

Build the project, after you build it should appear in the toolbox.
