The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Varchar data type padding spaces to max value

Hi,
I have a varchar data type field in my SQL table (MS SQL 2005). set to 50 characters, now if i place a value of "bob" when i retrieve the value thru a dataset it is retrieveing the value and padding in the other 47 available characters back and i am having to keep useing the trim command to trim it down to just the 3 characters into a varaible for "Bob". Is there a way around this so in vb.net i get just my value "Bob" as apposed to "Bob................"

thanks

In the SQL server you can make a new view and use rtrim(yourfield) or when you get the field form the db you can also use trim method

if your SQL field is really a VARCHAR field, it won't fill up with spaces. That means that it is your application that is sending all those blanks and you need to trim them in your application.

hi,
If i open SQL 2005, open the table and type in a value, and reopen the table it already allocates the spaceof the maximum field length, and thats got nothing to do with VB.Net yet.
[b0b2                                                                                                ]
this is the result of the copy from the field in the table

If you don't want to trim the spaces use instead NVARCHAR

jpaulino, nvarchar and varchar are the same (except that one can contains Unicode characters).

A (n)varchar field will never truncate spaces character by itself. If you don't send any extra blanks it won't add but it will never trim for you.

is your field datatype is CHAR or VARCHAR? It has to be VARCHAR

05.15.2008 at 06:44AM PDT, ID: 21573529
if i set the datatype to char or nchar then it does the pading,
however i have been testing in a test table and fund that if i use varchar then it does not pad it
so it looks like i need to change my field data types to varchar

Humm ,

I had that problem (and still have) with an old db not developed by me (and I don't have the source code). I will take a look because I normally use also varchar.

Thanks emoreau

emoreau,

I have looked to that application running on a SQL Server 97 that fills the fields with spaces. I thought that the problem was from the SQL but I have made a test application and work fine on it. The problem is form the application but I cannot change it. I have to trim all my custom reports.

In SQL 2005 I use it but I thought it was a SQL 97 problem.

Thanks once again.

>>SQL Server 97

Never heard about this version. You probably meant SQL Server 7.

Is the field defined as a varchar in this SQL Server 7 database?

Yes, sorry it's 7 and the fields are defined as varchar.

I use VS to create custom reports an I have to trim all the fields. It's a applications that collects in real time information form an assembly line (automobile) called RSSQL and PlantMetrics.
