The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Transfer data from VBScript recordset to Excel
Using SQL Server 2000 and DTS.

I created and populated an ADO recordset using ActiveX script. Data is not coming from any tables or queries.
How can the recordset data be transferred to Excel? I wanted to use the Transform Data Task but instead of the source being a connection, it needs to be the recordset's data.

I am not connected to any database. The recordset is created and populated using VBScript.

ok, this all depends on how you have the dat aretrieved,... you can write to a cvs file using filsystemobject or straight to excel using excel.application.. here is the excel option

objExcel.Displayalerts = false
objExcel.Cells( 1, 1) = string1
objExcel.Cells( 1, 2) = string2

for y = 3 to 10
objExcel.Cells( 1, y) = string3 & y

Excel is not available on the server. In fact very few production servers have Excel installed. So creating an Excel object is out of the question.

I don't want to write to the file system either nor create physical tables. Create table permisson is not allowed.

I just want a solution where I can use something like the Tranform Data Task. The source is my recordset and the destination in the Excel file. Everything is done within the dts package without resorting to external storage.

you can't write to excel without instatiating an excel object.

an you provide part of your script, so that i can find the best way to integrate a solution into it?

here is a simple fso sub

You can write to Excel without creating an Excel object. The connection object has an Excel type and I have used it before.

Your solutions do not follow my requirements and you keep suggesting ideas which oppose what I need.
I did say I can't use files. This means I can't use FSO. In my initial post I said my recordset is created and populated in vbscript and no databases are involved and you want me to create a source connection to sql server.

I appreciate your help however I have a very specific requirement. That's why I am posting here.

02.17.2008 at 12:08PM PST, ID: 20915287
It's using sql server and FSO. Nothing different than what you already mentioned.
I don't think you understand what I want so I am going to give an example.

My recordset is created and populated like this.
Set Rs  = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
rs.append "CustomerName", advarchar
rs.Addnew
rs.("customername") = "John Doe"
rs.update

So now I have one row with one field. The value is "John Doe"
And I also have an Excel file with a single sheet with a header called "CustomerName". That what makes  the Excel connection work because the xls is also created and defined.

My requirement:
How to copy the recordset rows to the spreadsheet? All I want to do is pump the data from the recordset to the xls file.

I know very few users do something like this. That's why I am posting this. This is not your typical data pumping from sql server to Excel. I know how to do this kind of data transfer.

Thanks. That works. I took off IMEX=1 because it was causing an error about recordset not being updateable.

i knew eventually i'd find a way.

glad it worked,.
