The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

rename a file by attaching datestamp at the end of filename using SSIS File task
Tags: sql, ie7
Hi SSIS Experts,

I have a dataflow task that creates a text file and posts it in a FTP share.
In need to rename the file attaching datestamp(current date of package execution) at the end of filename.
For ex: My dataflowtask creates a file called 'Samplename.txt'

I need to rename it to : 'Samplename20080225.txt.

I think it can be done using the File task...I see an option to rename the file but not sure of how to configure the task to attach current datestamp.

Suggestions and Help would be highly appreciated.
Please provide the steps on how to perform the above task.

Thanks,

You will need a string package level variable to store the destination path. Then you can use a Script Task to populate the variable with the proper path. Example:

Dts.Variables("DestinationFilePath").Value = "C:\MyDirectory\Samplename" & _
  Date.Now.Date.ToShortDateString().Replace("-", "") & ".txt"

File System Task is what you can use to rename the file (you can also do it with Script Task and .NET classes from System.IO namespace).  You shuld open File System Task Editor (by double-clicking on the task) and set:

Operation - Rename file
SourceConnection - choose a connection to a flat file you need to move
IsDestinationPathAvailable - True
DestinationVariable - choose the variable that stores the destination path

This may work.

I currently use a packages that dumps timesheet info to an excel sheet and then executes this SSIS SQL task to call a VB script.

exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'c:'
exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'cd windows\system32'
exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'start test.vbs'
GO

xp_cmdshell lets you run command line task from a SQL task

If your environment has mapped network drives it would be better to use the full file path (\\servername\shared\file.xls) than the mapped path F:/file.xls.

This is the vb script that is executed to rename the file.

Dim oFSO
Dim sSourceFile
Dim sDestinationFile

Set oFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
sSourceFile = "\\file path"
sDestinationFile = "\\file path & (cstr(month(date)) & "-" & cstr(day(date)) & "-" & cstr(year(date))) & ".xls"

oFSO.MoveFile sSourceFile, sDestinationFile

Set oFso = Nothing
Open in New Window

Thanks brejk for the quick reply.

I am not sure how to configure the script task.
where to provide the below code - Is it by clicking the 'Design script button in the Script Task editor.
where to provide the  varibale name in the below code?
Dts.Variables("DestinationFilePath").Value = "C:\MyDirectory\Samplename" & _
  Date.Now.Date.ToShortDateString().Replace("-", "") & ".txt"

in the Control flow you need drag drop Script Task from Control fow items
In Script under Script option click on Design Script you need write down code like this

        Dim srcFile, dstFile As String
        Dim intlen As Integer

        srcFile = Dts.Variables("varsrcFile").Value.ToString()
        dstFile =  "C:\MyDirectory\Samplename" & _
  Date.Now.Date.ToShortDateString().Replace("-", "") & ".txt"

               File.Copy(srcFile, dstFile, True)
