The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Running DTSX packages on SQLExpress

Tags: Microsoft, SQLExpress, Advanced Edition, SQLExpress Toolkit
I heard I could run a dtsx job (designed in BIDs with Sql 2005 Std DE) on SQLExpress installed on another PC. The dtsx package can be run fom the command prompt using the dtexec.exe utility.

So I've downloaded and installed SQLExpress Advanced Edition and the SQLExpress Toolkit. SQL is runnng OK but the dtexec.exe utilty was not installed.

Can any SQL experts tell me how to Install dtexec.exe on the SQLExpress box,  and successfuly run a dtsx package designed on another instance of SQL Server 2005?

You can connect to SQL Server Express with SSIS, but you can't run an SSIS package on an Express instance.  You'll need another edition of SQL Server to do that.  See the SQL Server 2005 features overview at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx

Dunno, could be he's found a way around it.  To be honest, I've never had or seen the need to run SSIS that way, and neither have any of my clients.

04.11.2008 at 03:17PM PDT, ID: 21338652
My situation is that my client has two streams of data to integrate. One is a weekly flat  of 10,000 records and the other is an export to flat file of 5,000 records from a local SQL Server 2000 installation for MS Dynamics AX.

SQLExpress is also installed for two other applications, Mail Marshall and a Robag datalogger.

The weekly flat files are placed in a transit folder for uploading to SQLExpressAE then the flat files are archived to a raw data repository.  This is the part I want to automate if possible.

I've developed SSIS import packages in BIDS for SQL Server 2005. Now I want to deploy the packages to the client's site to run on the existing instance of SQLExpressAE. I've also developed report querie to run on SQLExpressAE, to be run manually each month.

So why not just purchase and install SQL Server 2005 Std and be done with it!

The client does not want to add SQL Server 2005 Std to thier existing infrastructure.  Thier existing contracted DBA who maintains the mission critical SQL Server 2000 installation has quoted them an additional $NZ 2,500 per annum to cover an extra SQL Server 2005 installation. They would also need extra hardware to run SQL Server 2005 on, plus additional licensing costs. TCO in the first year would be in the order of $NZ 8,000 and $NZ 3,000 PA in subsequent years.    The client is budgeting to upgrade all server hardware and move to a SQL Server 2005/2008 Enterprise cluster within 2 years.

So having thought about the issues a bit more . . .  my real question is . .. I guess I can replicate the SQL Server 2000 data stream direct to SQLExpressAE.  That just leaves me with one last hurdle to get the weekly flat file (recieved by email) into SQLExpressAE.

Should I be asking that questuion of how to do that in another Zone?

The solution I've decided to go with is to use a Stageing database in SQL Sercer 2000, do the flat file imports and transformations in SQL2000 DTS running under SQL Agent, then replicate the Stageing database out to SQLExpress. I've tested the replication between SQL Server 2000 and SQLExpress and it works just great.
