Question

SQL Server 2005 Express - DTS wizard

Asked by: gjok

Hi,
Background: Our Live production database server is running "SQL Server 2000", but the dev team are now developing on SQL Server 2005 Express on our workstations.

Firstly As there is no DTS wizard with SQL Server 2005 Express, I have been moving our Dev databases to the Live (SQL2000) server by running the DTS on the Live server and choosing the source DB as my workstation.
The problem with this is that when I copy the data accross, all the PK's and Default values dont get copied accross.

My question is: Is there a new way to copy from 2005Express to SQL2000, if not how can I copy the database over so as to retain all the PK's and Default values ?

Are the two not 100% compatible?
Thanks

They're compatable, but Express doesn't come with DTS/SSIS, so you're in a tight spot.  Do you have DTS on your 2000 machine?  If so, you can try using that to move the data over.

Hi - Yes I explained process I currently use in my original post.

It seems stange that there is no means to copy *from* the machine running SQL Server Express. There must be a download???

Also what about my PK's and Default values ? why dont they get copied along with the data?

by: chapmandewPosted on 2008-05-14 at 05:16:48ID: 21563251

No, when you transfer data, PKey's and defaults are not moved as well....its always been that way (for some reason).

There are tools out there that you can purchase that will do it, such as SQL Compare from www.red-gate.com

Please could you explain what I am doing wrong then?
I am trying to copy data from my workstation PC to the server.

I run DTS on the SQL Server2000 machine (Source is my PC, and Destination is local)
Next, there are 3 radio buttons in the DTS.:
1) "Copy tables and views from the source database"
2) "Use a query to specify the data transfer"
3) "Copy objects and data between SQL Server databases"

Now, if I select optiopn 1, then the data is appended and the the Identities are all incorrect.
But, if I select option 3, the DTS crashes when I click the "select objects" button. (I say crashes, it just vanishes of the screen).

I just want to copy the data over - how hard can it be?

by: chapmandewPosted on 2008-05-14 at 07:02:54ID: 21564283

If you use 1, there is an option to keep the identity values...is this what you need?

by: gjokPosted on 2008-05-14 at 08:18:24ID: 21565155

I cant see that option?, but I want to overwrite the data each time I copy it over, not append it.
Option 1 seems to append only.

In that case, you'll want to truncate the table first.

Something is not right here. I know that Express is not 100% compatible.

I've been using SQL Server 2000 for 6 years or so, and when copying between  two SQL Server 2000 machines, I *can overwrite* the data, and if I select option 3 of the DTS I dont have any of these problems.

I'm sorry but I am not convinced.

OK. I have spent another couple of hours tring to solve this.
As you can see I am being hassled by EE to resolve this question and give my points away while my question remains (in my opinion) unanswered.

Firstly, for those of you who are developing on SQL Express 2005 and hosting on SQL 2000, the two are not 100% compatible.

Now, the problem is that when using the DTS, if you try to select the 3rd radio button ("Copy objects and data between SQL Server databases"), then it womt work. You will get the following error:

--- Failed to copy objects from Microsoft SQL Server to Microsoft SQL Server ---
Unable to connect to the source server for transfer.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Objects (SMO).

So with the 3rd radio button option not working, you will need to use the first radio button ("Copy tables and views from the source database")
But as I said in previous posts, the problem with this is that it will append the data to the existing records, so you will first need to delete the tables that you are wanting to transfer to ensure that no appending is done.

In Summary:
1. Delete the target tables on the destination database.
2. Use the first radio button ("Copy tables and views from the source database")

Hope that helps.
